Default 2019 Genesis G70

2019 Genesis G70. Genesis takes on the BMW 3 series. They have a ways to go. For some reason power is down substantially from older models. 4 wheel drive.

2019 Genesis G70 First Look: Genesis Challenges the Germans - Motor Trend

Quote:
“There’s no boring understeer,” Albert Biermann, Hyundai’s head of vehicle test and high-performance development, said of the proprietary AWD system. “Some people will still think it’s rear-wheel drive.”

Because “many things are subjective,” Biermann said the G70’s split between Sport and Normal modes will adjust settings for steering, throttle, shift points and response, transmission mapping, active sound, all-wheel-drive torque split, and adjustable shocks on the 3.3-liter and the possibility of adaptive dampers on the 2.0-liter.

Not sure why you think power is down? It's a completely different engine and delivery system than the old 4.6 and 5.0 V8's they used. This also has considerably less weight. A couple of mags already ripped 4.7 0-60s on it and they are thinking it'll be a 13.2-13.3 quarter mile time. I think it's going to sell well against the much more expensive 3/4 series. Should undercut a loaded one by 15K I'm assuming (maybe more?)

From autoweek:
Quote:
Weíve been generally impressed with the Lambda V6 in Genesisís large G90, and the G70 weighs about 1000 pounds less. The company reports that, at 4.7 seconds to 100 km/h (62 mph), the G70 3.3 is the quickest Hyundai product ever offered to the public. Based on other manufacturersí quoted acceleration times, that also puts the G70 near the very top of the class, not counting the factory-tuned hotrods.

They just did a first test on it:

2019 Genesis G70 First Drive: From Seoul With Soul - Motor Trend

Quote:
2019 GENESIS G70 FIRST DRIVE: FROM SEOUL WITH SOUL
Korea Builds Its First Compact Luxury Sports Sedan
Stefan Ogbac Words, Manufacturer PhotosSeptember 25, 2017

Genesis threw a huge concert in its hometown of Seoul, Korea, as part of its launch campaign for the G70, the third member of sedan lineup. Gwen Stefani, Andra Day, and Korean pop star CL performed as part of the festivities, but thereís more to this than just a concert with celebrities. The G70 is a big deal because it is the brandís first entry into the highly competitive compact luxury sport sedan segment, a crowd that includes stalwarts such as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 Series. Genesis threw a massive party to celebrate its most important model to date and the first to show the automakerís identity.

Born at Hyundai Motor Groupís Research and Development Center in Namyang, Korea, the 2019 Genesis G70 has its sights set on the segmentís key players, and it comes armed with a balance of expressive style, a fun driving experience, and a luxurious yet sporty interior. From the outside, the 2019 Genesis G70 has a smaller footprint than its platform mate, the Kia Stinger, thanks to a wheelbase thatís 2.8 inches shorter. In terms of dimensions, the 2019 G70 is 184.4 inches long, 72.8 inches wide, and 55.1 inches tall, putting right in the middle of its segment.

The front end features Genesisí corporate grille, similar to the one found in the larger G80 and G90 sedans, and itís flanked by a pair of LED strips inside the headlight cluster, which give the front fascia a bit more width. LED accent light strips that also double as turn signal indicators flank the G70ís lower front fascia along with functional air inlets next to them and give the car a more aggressive appearance. The rear end features a short decklid, two exhaust tips, and LED taillight clusters that blend together with the muscular rear haunches and fender flares.

After the official reveal at Hyundai Motor Groupís Namyang facility, journalists were able to take a close look at the G70 and its interior, particularly at the materials used. Stepping inside a car, youíll notice a driver-centric layout with a center stack thatís ever so slightly turned toward the driver and accented by stitching that forms a C-shape to further hint at the G70ís performance-minded nature. Touch and feel the materials, and youíll notice plenty of high quality leather, plastics, and even real metal accents on the doors and speaker grilles for the available Lexicon premium audio system.

Sitting inside, there are supportive front seats with extensive adjustability and plenty of support for enthusiastic driving without sacrificing long-distance comfort. However, those relegated to the rear seats might feel cramped because that sexy coupelike roofline cuts into rear headroom. The massive center hump in the second row also means the G70 is effectively a four-seat vehicle with extra room for a small adult passenger or a child. Kneeroom is also on the small side, meaning the rear seats on the G70 will likely be less usable for tall passengers.

The day after the official debut, we spent some time driving the G70 on the streets of Seoul, the highways and winding roads outside the city, and Inje Speedium racetrack to put the athlete of the Genesis family to the test. Driving through Seoulís notorious traffic, the G70 proved a comfortable drive, with light and communicative steering and a supple yet well controlled ride in Comfort and Smart modes. The standard Michelin Pilot Sport 4 high performance tires that come standard with the V-6-powered G70s, however, produced a little more noise than expected and can get tiring.

As with many vehicles with an eco-minded setting, Eco mode dulled the carís throttle response, which will force drivers to bury the accelerator to the floor every time they need power. Thereís a Custom mode that allows you to set the engine, transmission, suspension, and steering calibrations between Comfort, Sport, or Eco modes. Genesis also has an active sound enhancer for the G70ís exhaust system with four settings: Off, Normal, Quiet, and Enhanced.

While sitting in Seoulís congested streets, we tested the G70ís infotainment system, which features a freestanding tabletlike 8.0-inch touchscreen that was easy to use and responsive. The large multi-information display complements the main touchscreen and shows everything from lap time to fuel economy and drive info. Where the multimedia system in the G70 sets itself apart is its available Lexicon premium audio system. It features plenty of adjustability, crisp sounds, and rich tones. Not once did it get raspy or sound muddled, making it an excellent option for audiophiles.

Once out of the traffic, we were able to let the G70 loose on winding roads and open highways where we finally got to test out the powertrain. Our test vehicles were all-wheel-drive examples powered by the range-topping 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 with 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. In a car as small as the G70, this engine pulls with plenty of verve, and the prodigious amounts of torque make passing and merging a breeze.

The eight-speed automatic shifts quickly and smartly, and it rev matches its downshifts, giving the G70ís powertrain that extra layer of smoothness. However, when using the paddle shifters in Manual mode, our Korean-spec test cars automatically upshifted at redline, meaning itís not a true Manual mode. Genesis USA boss Erwin Raphael, on the other hand, assured us that U.S.-spec G70s will have a way to put the transmission in full Manual mode so it wonít upshift for you.

During the final leg of the drive to Inje Speedium, we drove the G70 through some fun winding roads, and it is there where it revealed its rear-drive roots despite our test cars putting its power down through all four wheels. In Sport mode, all-wheel-drive-equipped G70s send more torque to the rear wheels (around 80 to 100 percent instead of 40 to 70 percent), giving it a similar feel to a rear-drive vehicle. In Sport mode, the electronically controlled suspension stiffens up quite a bit and feels more planted through the twisties, but that comes at the cost of ride comfort because it does get quite rough in its most aggressive setting. Body motions are well controlled with minimal roll and excellent transitions when you string corners. The electronic steering, on the other hand, adds more weight but could use more feel and feedback in Sport mode.

Although Genesis insists the G70 isnít a full-blown performance model, they still had us drive a few laps at Injen Speedium. Stability remained a key trait on the all-wheel-drive-equipped G70, making it feel unflappable on the track, even with its rear-drive bias, and it explodes out of the corners effortlessly. Thereís also less understeer in Sport mode because the all-wheel-drive system shifts more torque to the rear wheels, giving it a more balanced feel and enabling it to oversteer more.

We also got the chance to take a rear-drive G70 3.3T out for a single lap, and we immediately noticed how much more playful it is compared to the all-wheel-drive car. The rear-drive G70ís tail-happy nature is in full show. The prototypeís rear end was more willing to drift. All rear-drive G70s with the V-6 also come with a mechanical limited-slip differential as standard, allowing it to better put its power down to the wheels.

After some laps on the track, we made our way to an autocross course. We found that the G70 shrinks around its driver, making it drive smaller than it is. It was also there where we were able to test the carís braking system to see how it copes with enthusiastic driving. The standard Brembo front brakes that come with V-6-powered models scrub speed effectively. They didnít fade after a few laps on the track and the autocross course with a bunch of lead-footed auto journalists behind the wheel.

Weíve yet to drive it back to back with its competitors, but based on our time with the car in Korea, the 2019 Genesis G70 might just be one of the more compelling entries in the compact luxury sport sedan segment. There are sharper entries such as the Alfa Romeo Giulia and more luxurious ones such as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Where the 2019 Genesis G70 shines is in its balance. It provides excellent driving dynamics with its capable yet super playful chassis, but it doesnít sacrifice much in terms of comfort. The interior is luxurious, well-built, and driver-centric without being overly complicated and remaining user-friendly. Balance is the Genesis G70ís game harmonizing luxury, comfort, style, and sportiness in the same way Korean culture blends old traditions with modernity seamlessly.

Previous HP/TQ ratings were 420/383 compared to 365/375.

For the price/value, people should be looking at the Genesis/Hyundai brand.

I'll be the one to say it. It looks much better than the 3 series too.

The 3 series is so painfully boring these days. If you must entry level BMW you need to do a Gran Coupe 4 series.

The execution (quality) of the interior will make or break this car. It's easy to design an interior that looks good in photos, but the Germans do a good job with adding nice quality materials throughout the interior. I was considering a Q50 3.0t to replace my G37, but this will be on my list too (along with the Stinger).

I think one thing Genesis really needs to do is redesign their emblem so it's not so close to Chrysler's. From what I read, the emblem turns people off to the brand. Easy fix there.

I was going to say that too. One of the big differences in cars that people don't take into account is the quality of the interior. A lot of companies have brought that luxury look to the interiors but without the luxury quality (looking at you Cadillac).

I recently had a 2013 535i around my house for a few weeks and I completely forgot how amazingly built those cars are. The doors shut with a solid thud and the interior materials wear amazingly and are actually high quality, not just high quality looking.

In my experience most of these import luxury cars have way more in common with Chrysler's idea of fake luxury than they do the Germans.

@Bru Any new info on this car? It's basically a classier/smaller version of the Stinger. I've heard a couple of people have gotten their hands on it for minor testing but nothing mainstream yet.

Didn't see one at the Denver auto show.

Good luck telling any of them apart. They killed themselves by not advertising that they are a separate brand now.

RWD, twin turbo 4.5 secs to 60 is nice.

Genesis (Ha Ha, I started typing Hyundai) needs to get its GV80 SUV out sooner rather than later.

Concept reveal at 2:30.

If resale is as terrible as past Genesis models, I'll pick up a used one for sure. The bad resale has nothing to do with reliability. This car is exactly what I'd like to daily drive.

The fact they don't have a dedicated next-level dealer network like Acura/Infiniti/Lexus does really hurts here.

Hate to say it, but I've yet to have a favorable experience in a Hyundai/Kia dealership so far across 4 states.

The new G90 I'm eyeing as picking up for my next car - comfy cruiser, as a 2-year old CPO.

They're a stand alone brand now, just a matter of time for the dealer network to work itself out.

This is the best way to spend $50,000 on a sports sedan. I have no qualms calling this the most comprehensive driver's car in its class after a few hundred miles in a 3.3 AWD, and that's without the sport package that includes adaptive dampers and Pilot 4S (Super Sport) tires. Here's why:

-Genesis doesn't force you to buy the sport package, sport steering, sport differential, sport air in the tires, sport radio, sport seat belt stitching to have an engaging car. Even in the 3.3 base suspension, the chassis is tight, responsive, settled and the steering reacts with a hair's degree of turn-in, builds resistance as you dig in the corner and gives little twinges of feedback even with the economy-oriented Primacy tires. The Stinger GT is a couch potato compared to the athletic handling of the G70.
-The V-6 is as good as any German turbo engine. Boost response is immediate and reacts like a completely different engine than the Stinger GT. Launch control is standard. I wouldn't count out mid-high 12s in this. Noticeable exhaust, but not raunchy. And a loaded V-6 is as much money as a German competitor's well-equipped four-cylinder. The Alfa Giulia is an amazing-handling car, but your only non-QF engine option is a noisy four-cylinder.
-Nothing is done stupidly. The bits inside that come from Hyundai are the reason why it's so easy to live with. The touchscreen multimedia system has a volume and tuning knob - no center controller, no touchpad, not gesture control - just a simple, easy-to-use interface with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a bangin' stereo. Again, nothing stupid.
-On the downside, this isn't a family car. The backseat and trunk are snug. But then again, this is likely a second car for most who have an SUV on the other side of the garage. I think this gives Genesis an excuse to go aggressive on the suspension tuning. Also, they have a lot to prove on the buying/ownership side. You can't beat that Hyundai warranty, but fuck off if you expect Starbuck's coffee in the waiting room drip machine - you're getting burnt Folgers.

Saw a G90 at the car show. Holeo fuck I didn't realize that boat cars were back. I mean I looked it up it has a 124" wheel base. To give a point of reference the early to mid 70s rivieras were 122" wheel base. The biggest land yacht that Cadillac made was 130" wheel base or so. That's a big ass car.
