Until now, the next-generation Volkswagen Golf R destined for North America was missing one key ingredient — a manual transmission. That’s about to change.
The Golf R is still on track to launch in North America this spring as a 2015 model, and with only a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission as standard equipment. But according to Car and Driver, the 2016 Golf R will launch shortly thereafter in the summer with the option of a six-speed manual transmission — for U.S. consumers, at least.
The 2015 Golf R will start at $37,415 in the U.S. with the dual-clutch automatic as standard. The 2016 model is expected to remain the same, but opting for the manual will result in a $1,100 trim off the price. More than likely, the manual will be a tick slower from a standstill to 100 km/h compared to the automatic, but the price discount might just be a worthy trade-off for row-your-own gearbox purists.
As for us Canadians, we’ll see the six-speed manual Golf R offered in the Great White North at the same time as the U.S. market.
