If the need for diesel trucks is dwindling, why the fuck are they still holding their value so well.

new diesel trucks... the need for brand new diesel trucks in a strictly consumer aspect is dwindling due to the capabilities/performance/value of the new gas powered light duty trucks in my opinion.

http://special-reports.pickuptrucks....nd-towing.html

who is pulling what heavier than 10k?

that isn't doing it for personal use (not work/business related).

10k is a shit ton of weight... personal horse trailers... if you have 3+ horses... I dont know too many people who own excavators & skid steers for personal use that need to trailer them places... umm... what else we got... boats? you're gonna have a big ass boat if it's 10k + and still trailerable.

which there are fewer of than you would think.

I am by no means saying that diesel trucks are going to be replaced by gas trucks, but at the same time, when the gas trucks are getting almost just as good of if not better mpg, make a decent amount of power, and do it all in a great package... the $8,000 upgrade to get a diesel really isn't a bargain or necessary anymore.

I understand this. And look forward to seeing what they come up with. But some of the news says that the motor will also be designed to go for comercial vehicles as well. And it'll also have two cylinders lopped off for a V6 variant.

mpg, power, efficiency, reliability. it makes a shit ton of sense. back before the world collapsed in 07/08... gm was talking about a duramax for 1500 pickups and everyone had a raging boner for it.

QUOTE]

Gm was working on a V6 duramax. It was also going to radically different in that the exhaust ports on the heads were going to come out in the valley and go right into the valley mounted turbo and the normal exhaust manifold side was going to be the air intakes. Pretty cool design but never got implemented cause the economy took a dump.

That was originally what I heard was going to be happening. The V8 was a curve-ball for sure.

I tow with my truck often, and my average fuel economy is hovering right around 17mpg... that's combined over thousands of miles... I'd love to get a new diesel, but, with the EPA cracking down and all the DEF and garbage being thrown into the mix, I would be very hesitant to buy a new diesel. I will be looking at the 2015 3/4 ton GMC's next year when they finally come out, but, I will most likely end up with a gas truck unless I'm certain I'm not going to get stuck with no tuning options and other government bullshit.

Whale Whale Whale. I did not know Ford went that route. I used to read all the diesel mags back in the day when I heard about the V6 Duramax. I havent bought one in years tho.

You'd think working at an International deal I should know these things

I have been waiting for this news to come out for a while and am excited to see what its final advertised numbers in the chassis are. They have been testing these trucks here locally for the last 2 years. This motor has been a long time in design and I believe is a variation of what was originally designed and intended for the ram 1500 and also i believe a v6 version for the 300. I dont know know any final numbers on anything but i am sure it will be over 500ftlb of torque and im sure over 300hp. I have heard its going to have twin compound style turbos so should have excelent low end power. This motor should blow the dodge diesel out of the water in all aspects. I am interested to see what the additional cost is over the 5.6l since that will be its down fall if any.

I'm a Nissan tech, that said, I don't think a Diesel or a redesign is going to help the truck much, imo. As it is now, we have 2 2012s and 4 2013 Titans on our lot and they are not moving ... at all. And the tech centers are usually buzzing about new products coming out, nothing much is being said. A couple years ago Nissan supposedly had a deal with Chrysler Corp. to build a new Titan on the now current Ram chassis if Nissan built engines for them to put in the 1500 series Ram. That didn't happen. There's been other ideas since then but nothing has panned out ... yet. A redesign is definitely coming, but I'd believe a Cummins or any kind of diesel when I see it. Chances are, the redesign is going to be stuck with the same 5.6 liter V8 that's been the only engine since the truck came out in 2004. We'll see I guess.
