Word on the street is that the next-gen Cadillac CTS-V, due as a 2014 model, will retain its force-fed powerplant but its design will be based on the modern 6.2-liter LT1 that will find a home under the hood of the new Corvette. General Motors is reportedly working on two variants of the engine, one supercharged and the other with twin turbochargers – one of the engines will serve duty in the upcoming CTS-V and the brand's upcoming rear-wheel drive flagship. Expect the engine, regardless of its intake method, to make more power than the current powerplant (a 6.2-liter V8 with an Eaton Twin Vortices Series supercharger developing 556 horsepower and 551 pound-feet of torque), but with improved efficiency.

The ATS-V, still officially unannounced, will reportedly get a twin-turbocharged V6. That engine should be plenty powerful, but if consumers demand even more displacement there is room under the hood for something as large as a 7.0-liter V8, say reports. Wouldn't that be fun?

Spied! 2015 Cadillac ATS-V (V8) Winter Testing

If these spy shots are any indication, Cadillac will be adding a little brother to the CTS-V sports sedan. We’ve just caught a camouflage-clad ATS-V out testing in the snow.

2015 Cadillac ATS V profile 2 spied 300x187 imageWhile this may not be the best look at the new car, we can make out a number of important changes that demarcate this ATS as the high-performance V model. Most notable are the larger wheels and the quad exhaust tips spotted on this tester, poking out from what looks to be a revised rear diffuser. Up front, we can clearly see bigger intakes that eschew the lower LED running lights found on the normal ATS. The grille has also been revised and looks slightly larger, as well.

All this added space for airflow makes sense – recent rumors have pointed toward the ATS-V being powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 fettled to the tune of around 380 hp. However, our spy shooter noted that the car pictured here had “an impressive exhaust note that sounded more V-8 than V-6.” From the pictures, we can’t tell whether the 556-hp supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 from the CTS-V would fit.

If the ATS-V does, in fact, end up with 380 hp, it doesn’t stack up well against the competition. The BMW M3 pumps out 414 hp from its 4.0-liter V-8 (and the 2015 M3/M4 is expected to have similar output), while the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG churns 451 hp from its 6.2-liter V-8. That said, the ATS-V would trump the Audi S4′s 333 hp from its supercharged 3.0-liter V-6.

Currently, 2015 Cadillac ATS V rear three quarter spied 300x187 imagethe most potent powerplant the ATS uses is a 321-hp 3.0-liter V-6 engine coupled to a six-speed automatic. Buyers can also choose from a 2.5-liter I-4 good for 202 hp or a 272-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four, which can be mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic.
