Apparently the FIA really hates north america as a whole, since they just killed the canadian gp, the only remaining north american gp on the calender.

The Canadian Grand Prix, staged at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal since the late 70s, has been left off the latest F1 calendar.

After a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council on Tuesday, the sport's governing body issued an amended 18-race calendar, omitting the race previously scheduled for 7th June.

Instead, the Turkish Grand Prix has been moved from 9th August to June, creating an August 'summer break'.

The loss of the Canadian Grand Prix was news to the race organisers at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. In a statement the organisers said they would not comment until they have spoken with FOM and the FIA.

Another significant development to come from the Extraordinary meeting is to allow 'teams to equalise engine performance across the field for 2009, pending the introduction of cost-saving measures from 2010'.

Meanwhile, in the FIA's row with the German racing federation ADAC, the FIA vowed to ensure that the associated authority DMSB 'is truly independent of the ACAC and capable of running the sporting power in the country'.

FIA President Max Mosley was also given authority to negotiate with the F1 teams' alliance FOTA and introduce 'radical measures to achieve a substantial reduction of costs in the championship from 2010'.

And in a Formula Two development, the top three drivers in the new low-cost feeder series 'will qualify for an FIA Superlicence', the Paris-based body said in a statement.

heres a followup article. the canucks wern't even TOLD about it. they had to hear about it thru the news like you and me

In a surprising statement issued by the organisers of the Canadian Grand Prix, it was revealed that no news of plans to axe North America's single Formula One event had reached them prior to its announcement.

The Canadian GP was removed from the 2009 calendar by the FIA's World Motor Sport Council earlier today, with no explanations given.

"The organisers of the Canadian Grand Prix have learned through the media of the Canadian Grand Prix's removal from the 2009 Formula One championship calendar," the two-paragraph French-language statement reads.

"Consequently, no comments will be issued before speaking with the interested parties, Formula One Management (FOM) and the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA)."

The news hit Montreal like a storm, provoking strong reactions among fans towards the FIA, which is accused of showing disrespect towards the long-standing event. The race has taken place on the famous circuit Gilles-Villeneuve every year since 1987.

In an interview with Radio-Canada, Montreal Mayor GĂ©rald Tremblay spoke of an important loss of 75 million dollars for the local economy, adding that he was going to contact Canadian GP promoter Normand Legault to "see what we can do."

In 2006, Legault stated that an agreement maintaining the Canadian round of the championship until 2011 had been reached with Bernie Ecclestone.

update on what really caused it

The organizers of the Canadian Grand Prix has said there is only one way to keep Formula 1 coming to Canada and that is with the help of the government. The race promoter's Spokesman Paul Wilson has revealed there is a commercial disagreement between Ecclestone and the organizers of the Canadian Grand Prix.

Wilson said a handful of proposals of ways to reduce Montreal's financial burden were put to FIA and they expected at least one of them to be accepted, but were surprised when they were turned down. "It is true that a commercial disagreement existed between us, and we are sorry that Mr. Ecclestone deemed it appropriate to cut short the negotiations and react in this manner," Wilson said. "For an organization like ours, which is to say a private promoter, the actual business model implemented by the owners and the Formula One teams is no longer feasible."

Legault's company had three years to run on a five-year extension of its contract signed in 2006 with Ecclestone's company, which runs Formula One and has since been sold to British-based CVC. But it had out-clauses that could be exercised each year. Legault will not contest the decision.

The only way the Grand Prix can be saved is when the Canadian government is willing to invest but they will have to decide if it is worth injecting cash to bring Formula One back to Monreal. "Is it worth it? I can't answer that, they (the government) can," said Wilson.

Why would you want to scrap that race? That track is beautiful. Plus, F1 is pushing itself out of prime markets and proven ones too. Pretty soon the only countries that will have races will be Monaco and any other upshooting country that wants to wave its dick on the national scene.

they're trying to make the series too "showy" now. its pretty much just a whos' who gathering of celebrities and the little people are starting to get the short end of the stick. traditions are going out the window and its all about who can flash the most $$$ around and build the coolest looking track to try and showcase F1...
