question about plate renewel

so my plates on the TA expire this month and would have to be renewed within the next week or so to avoid paying any kind of extra fees.

thing is, the car won't be out anymore this year, so i don't have to be concerned with expired registration tickets. now onto my question.

i want to get vanity plates on the car over the winter. will i run into problems if i don't renew the plate this month? or if i do renew this month, will i be practically be paying double if i go for vanity plates in a couple months? will i get a new sticker and registration with vanity plates? if i do, then theres no reason for me to renew this month for some regular ass plates.

yea they say you either gotta doit three months before the renewal is due or after you renew so you pay double.
