Router: WRT54G (version 2)

So I barely used my wifi for the past couple months do to the fact that I wouldnt get internet access after a random amount of time on my wireless network. I had the most up to date firmware (v4.21.1 or something like that). The firmware was released in 2006. Never really had problems that much until basically this year. I had a protected network that was set up for my laptop and a wired connection to my ps3. (I would use my iPhone on the wireless network as well).

Well one day it just stopped working. Tried looking at the settings and NOTHING was wrong. So I restored to factory default. It seemed to work. Setup an encryption again. Worked for a day or a week. Then stopped again. Did another factory default. Worked again...and I kept my network open this time. A day passes and NO INTERNET CONNECTION. So basically since there's no other firmware upgrade (as I have the latest-2 year old firmware), the problem seems to lie on my router blocking my internet access whether or not its wireless or wired.

So I flashed my router with Tamato Firmware 1.25.7z. So far my wireless (and encrypted) network seems to be working pretty nicely. Irritates the hell out of me that Linksys does NOTHING to fix their own problem with a bad firmware. Many people are having problems with that firmware for my router model. Way to go Linksys!!! :hsugh:

I have the same router and don't have many problems with it. Sometimes the internet is a little choppy and then i just reset it. Is this Tamato third party firmware?

Yea...third party. Works great so far. Also shows whats accessing your wifi and their signal.

DDWRT I heard was good as well. That was going to my next option if I didn't like Tomato.

POS Neon....what kind of Router do you have?

Damn..that's crazy. I know that the Tomato firmware I downloaded allows a few more extra things than the linksys firmware did.

PolarCloud.com said:
Tomato is a small, lean and simple replacement firmware for Linksys' WRT54G/GL/GS, Buffalo WHR-G54S/WHR-HP-G54 and other Broadcom-based routers. It features a new easy to use GUI, a new bandwidth usage monitor, more advanced QOS and access restrictions, enables new wireless features such as WDS and wireless client modes, raises the limits on maximum connections for P2P, allows you to run your custom scripts or telnet/ssh in and do all sorts of things like re-program the SES/AOSS button, adds wireless site survey to see your wifi neighbors, and more.

yes...Tomato.

There's also DD-WRT, and a bunch of other free third party firmwares.

As for the Linksys routers. The wrt-54g (version 1-4) with firmware version 4.21.1 (or something similar to that) are the ones that have problems with internet accessibility. It basically blocks your wireless (or wired) devices from going on the internet (even though it says you have an internet connection).

I've haven't had any problems with my version 2 for the longest time until I just simply couldn't setup my wireless network. I ended up updating to the latest firmware (which is the 4.??.?) and it began to work. It worked for a little over a year or so, then for the past few months wouldn't hold. I decided to go third party firmware and that's when I stumbled upon a forum (from linksys)(forum.linksys.com if i'm not mistaken, which I could be)... and within that forum, people were saying how much of a problem the latest firmware was and how people were having more problems. Linksys never got around to making a patch or releasing a new firmware. So that pushed me over the edge to try a free third party firmware.

(which i'm sure you know that you can do various things with third party firmwares for routers. Like a speed boost, extended range, making a router as an additional access point, ect.)

I had that issue, just unplug it once in a while, for like 5-10minutes, plug it back in, and it's good for a few more weeks

The thing is whenever I did unplug it, factory reset, ect, it still lasted no longer than a week (after the firmware update). I never had to do it before I updated the firmware. But now I have Tomato firmware which seems to be a little better IMO. I can see what devices are accessing the router/internet.
