So we were driving in colleens car tonight and something very weird happened.

We driving and suddenly the steering felt loose as shit... best example I can give is when you sit at a driving game at the Arcade and the wheel wants to spin. It feels like a crappy arcade racer.

Her car still turns but it feel like there's zero resistance. Then when we almost got home (after turning around), the steering went back to normal.

Any thoughts? It was a real scary feeling.

And for more info on how it works:

Edit 1:

Check your fuses:

If power to the solenoid or control valve actuator is lost, the valve keeps the bypass circuit closed so full power assist is provided under all driving conditions. The only indication of trouble, therefore, might be a loss of road feel and/or increased steering sensitivity at highway speeds.

Maybe a chunk of snow/ice knocked loose the connection, IIRC it is on the botom of the rack

Edit 2:

Pic's of rack so you can see the wires

double check the rack connector, through the pass wheel well/below the master brake cyl., make sure its intact, disconnect and reconnect it after looking at the pins/making sure the inside is dry. and it should clear any corrosion that may have occured (GM weather/metri-pack connectors car leak in water/salt...ie connector is hot/exposed to engine bay heat, gets doused in ice cold saltwater/slush and it draws that in)
its also located close enough to the drivers side axle that it can get ripped apart if they touch while at speed

actual rack failure can follow the same course you described but honestly damn near every rack ive ever replaced was due to leaks/uneven steering effort
