car wont start...

well my moms 98 gp gt wont start, so i pulled the starter and it tests out just fine, so im stumped now lol... the battery is good also, when I turn the key nothing happens, no click from the starter or anything... anyone got any ideas?

could be but its been gradually getting worse. it used to not start maybe 1 out of 100 starts now it does nothing

check your power wires, start at the battery connections and look for green corrosion due to the infamous delco side terminal acid leaks...the acid wicks its way downt he cables and corrodes them from the inside out, though you mention there's no click at all?, maybe a bad ign switch, p/n switch (shift into neutral before starting or move shifter around while holding the key to the crank position) to a bad fuse on one of the primary ign power circuits...all your dash lights turn on in the run position and then they go out when you go to the crank position right? should be the yellow or purple wire from the ign switch that goes to the starter solenoid, 97+ no longer have the circuit routed through the range switch, but it is still part of the primary side of the stater interlock/enable system

you are correct sir about the dash lights and the no sound or clicks when turning the key, ill try messing with the shifter since thats easy and the weather is shitty today lol

not to mention a battery can look good on a multimeter but still be bad.

i had to replace one of the big 3 wires in a malibu once that caused a problem much like yours. i would look into what james i talking about.

your right that would be a good indicator the ign switch is still switching to the run position but that wont verify that the crank position is working

if you can hook up a snapon redbrick/or other scantool and see if the pcm see the cranking signal that will tell ya whether its the ign switch or a secondary circuit problem

i dont have one sitting around but maybe ill be able to borrow one from a friend or something

what do you mean you "tested" the starter.... i had the EXACT same symptoms with my company buick lasaber recently, we had one guy crank the car over while another tapped on the starter and it fired right up..... they changed both the battery and the starter and i havent had the problem since...the other thing is the ign switch which is a BITCH on these cars... again, same symptom, different cause though. i had to do that on my grand prix not to long ago....

have you tried shifting the car to neutral and seeing if it starts?
if the range switch is bad, it may think it's in gear....
