I just started shopping but so far I have this:

CPU/MB:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/se...p;sku=M452-2840

Power Supply:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/se...ku=ULT31846%20K

HD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16822210004

Ram:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820211066

Video Card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814125036

I just need Case and some misc... Looking to build a media center to hook up in my room on a tight budget. I already have the optical drives and a 300 gig ide drive.

Thoughts?

As posted on chicago garage:

Honestly those are probably some of the most shitty components you can buy. I have never even herd of a EXCELSTOR hard-drive, give me a break. Spend $10 more and get a name brand like a seagate, is your personal data worth saving a little money.

My recommendations.

Asus mobo, kingston ram, seagate hd, antec PSU, evga video card.

AMD and MCE FTL too.

Anothrer option is to look into the Hauppage line of cards. My Media center PC also is my primary gaming box so it's a bit stout

Core 2 duo 6850 3ghz
2GB DDR3 10800 RAM
10k RPM WDC Raptor SATA 150 GB
150GB 5400 RPM storage
Nvidia 8800GTS (640MB Video memory)
Liquid cooling for CPU and GPU
ASUS Blitz Extreme motherboard
Hauppage dual tuner external USB

that's the old one

I have it connected to one DTV receiver via Component (audio via digital audio to my 500 watt computer sound system that's doubling as my TV speakers for now)

Then I have a serial port adapter that plugs into the low speed connection of the DTV receiver to change channels

Beyond TV for DVR functions
Beyond TV network package to broadcast TV over the network to any computer wired/wireless

try again.
the ram you are looking at is 240 pin DDR2 while the socket 939 AMDs only support 184 pin PC3200 DDR.
also the hard drive you are looking at is pretty small for a media center PC.
video card is also low end....
if you are going to build a PC, buy really good hardware, dont skimp out. you will be much happier with it when its all built and running like you want it to.

here is a decent build i put together really quick.
CPU/MOBO
VIDEO CARD
HARD DRIVE
RAM

and of course your case (go full tower, its way easier to work in and expand when the time comes), power supply, cd drive, and misc cables.

again plan this out, and if you dont have the cash now, wait till you do because you will save yourself money in the long run because you wont have to upgrade as soon.

PM me if you have more questions, i can help you along with this

Aw crap, the first board used 240 and I didn't notice this one was DDR, my fault.

I have a 300 GB IDE that I already own that I am putting in there as well, but I already own that.

I am looking for a descent card, I don't play any games that are super HQ and from what I hear I dont need a 400 card to get good media center attributes. Plus I want to take advantage of the SLI component down the road.

And yes this is me planning. :) I made the mistake before of buying a bunch of stuff one night and it didnt work out how I wanted.

How is this:
# AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+(65W) Windsor 2.4GHz Socket AM2 Processor Model ADO4600CUBOX - Retail
# ASUS M2N-E SLI AM2 NVIDIA nForce 500 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

for 171 from Newegg...

Just don't like AMD. Personal thing.
I didnt look all the way through the second list so my bad on that. Doing 3 things at once LOL.
I understand about not wanting to spend a crapload, and I realize it's just for a medie center set-up so you really dont need THAT much power, but you also don't want to wind up upgrading something 6 months now either.

AMD is not as good as Intel speed wise. AMD is still a good brand and is just as reliable as intel.
and you definitly do not have to spend 1k on a good PC.
i just posted a decent machine. but i guess if you want to use the sli option down the road buy the nvidia. ATI has sh1t crossfire support (if you got a crossfire board)

keep posting your plans for specs.

the only difference between the am2 and 939 is the ram it uses. also they are higher speeds. a 4800 939 and a 4800 940(am2) will perform virtually the same, not enough to tell a difference, unless you are doing heavy stuff.
but yes the 939 is basicly dead, but not at all slow or outdated.
my setup is as follows:
AMD X2 4800+ 939.
DFI CFX3200-DR crossfire supported mobo
4GBs kingston PC3200 DDR
2 500GB WD SATA hard drives in raid.
ATI HD 2900XT 1GB GDDR4

im a gamer tho ;)
