git the late model fbody caliper/rotor swap done, dude

Have you done that? That would be cool. Is there a decrease in stopping distance?

Any clearance issues with the bigger setup?

I havent done it yet, but it is on my short list, now that i have gotten rid of the cross lace wheels

there will be no clearance issues if you have aftermarket or stock gp wheels that are NOT the cross lace wheels.

there are quite a few members of the national board with this mod already

the fbody calipers are dual piston type, and will stop better.

you need a few things for this mod:
99 up fbody front calipers
99 up fbody brakes
99 up fbody front caliper brackets
intrigue 12" rotors (JA9 is the option code, i think)
OR
it was recently discovered that most aftermarket fbody rotors actually are the same p/n as the intrigue 12" rotors, the lug holes are large enough to accomodate both lug paterns

you can use the gp brake lines, but you need the banjo bolts for an fbody caliper
obviously new crush washers for brake line too

the last thing you need is to mod the fbody caliper brackets

the fbody caliper bolts are smaller than the gp's so you need to do one of 2 things:

you can either stop by a machine shop and have them cut new threads in your fbody caliper brackets (should be 14mmx2.0) and use the gp bolts,

or use the fbody caliper bolts and pick up a bronze sleve bushing from like mcmaster carr ( i do not have the p/n, but i know it is on the national board in one of the threads)

and yes, the stopping difference is very noticeable..

and also, if you have 18" or larger wheels, you could even use corvette calipers.

grand am equiped GPs stop after trapping 125+.they stop pretty quick.
its a not very practical, but hell of a weight loss. they just wont last as long
i was more or less fucking around to a point. but i think they look better as well
and its nice when changing not to have to hold a heavy as caliper.
you can balance a GA one with 1 finger

eh, the fbody calipers are aluminum....

the fbody setup will put you through the windshield if youre not careful

and can be used with stock 5 spoke style wheels

I personally think the best compromise between price/performance are the GXP breaks which you can pickup on ebay for like 450/550 off a wrecked/salvaged car.
you just have to swap the four calipers/brackets/rotors and you need the gxp break pedal because it has a different ratio so the pedal doesn't go to the floor :)

I wouldn't say gxp breaks have more initial "bite" then fbody breaks but after repeated uses the gxp breaks will destroy fbody breaks because of the larger rotor size and ventalated disks.

plus they look sexy :naughty:

no, but that's the advantage to running gxp breaks. the larger rotor.

they are useless to me, since I dont run bigger than 16 inch rims.

GA brakes stop RACE GPs at 125MPH. 3K lbs or less. And they are track cars. Not daily drivers. Seriously, I dont know how you come up with some of this stuff. GA brakes. We have it all wrong people. Brake upgrades are actually smaller then stock. :lolsign: Straight from intense:

- This braking setup consists of small rotors with very thin friction surfaces. They will warp easily in repeated or panic stop situations, and are NOT recommended for street use.

Why dont we put some 14 inch metro tires and rims to save weight and less rotating mass.

bah... metro's are like 12" tires or so... but i say screw that, lets just run space saver spares all the time... that would sooooo rock
