Because when your maff is dirty the car won't run right. And K and N filter oil is a leading cause of that. GM put out a TSB about it that if a tech saw an excessively oiled filter to question transmission repair because the oil was probably the cause. (Don't quote me)

You probably don't gain any more HP, it just restores the lost Hp by cleaning the dirity maf. Even filtered air has dirt particals in it, which over time would stick to the maf not allowing it to read properly. Ever see a ceiling or window fan blades, and the dirt thats on them? Same thing happens to your maf, just not as bad.
