3800 Computer making noises..what is this..

It makes a horrible noise till i smack the side of the case and it goes away fora while...but comes back again later...lol


Its the fan that says 8X on it...is that changeable? Part name..im not sure what the name of it would be..

Yeah, you can change it. But you will have to get some thermal compound and stick the new fan on.

That's funny, my wife's computer is noisy until you smack it too. In her case I think it's the HD though.

Ok did a little digging..

that part is according to my install guide

the "nVIDIA nForce 2 Ultra 400"

my actual motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2


Its little fan on top I believe that is making allt he racket..is that replaceable or do I need a new Motherboard?

yea i hate the fans mine was doing that cuz of the ball bearings either needs oiling or sumthen its a pain, but lately it hasnt done it.

well i know its that fan on the mother board..lol cause i put my finger in it briefly to slow it down..and the noise went away..

I hope its not my hard drive..I just got a sata 160 gb in this pc i had built..

but i ordered that thing fromt he link from vipermike..so we'll see what happens.

yes, that is a northbridge cooling fan... but i have some bad news

the coolermaster fan that is in that newegg link does not have the proper mounts for your board... at least by the pics of it and of your board


most northbridge coolers (including the one on yours going bad) have 2 spring loaded clips on opposite corners to hold it on... hence you need one like it to hold it on best.

some use an adhesive tape type thermal compound, but they do not hold up...

I have this one:

Vantec Kit

If you look at the closeup pic, you'll see the holes for mounting, even tho they do not show the spring loaded pins... (you may need to re-use your old ones, removeable with a needle-nose pliers)

this kit also comes with a matching passive heatsink for the southbridge.


(and yeah, the product title says VGA cooler, but it works for both!)
