Hello all,

I was wondering if you run Norton Antivirus, does it "access" files when it scans them. Such as, if you right click on a file and go to properties. You are given three things at the bottom:

Created: Date & Time
Modified: Date & Time
Accessed: Date & Time

After you run a virus scan, will the "Accessed" date and time reflect that of when the virus scan ran?

If it shouldnt do that, but does, what would be the problem?

Background:

A friend thinks that a room-mate was accessing files on his computer. He checked the "Accessed" part and it was accessed when he was out of the room. Last virus scan was several days before. He wants to confront the room-mate, but wants to know if anything could have accessed it during a scan or something.

Or will it only say "Accessed" when its actually opened.

Thanks for the help.

NO.

It will not change the properties of a file structure.

Norton only keeps a log of scheduled scans. And different activities that pertain to norton.

Depending on which Operating system he is using. There are many things he can do to audit users and lock out users.

Let me know whic OS he is on.

He is on XP, but he doesnt want to put up passwords because he does have several friends that get on his computer. He just doesnt want his room-mate doing it.

Is there a way to password protect certain folders?

So what you are saying is that there is no way that a file will have a "Accessed" date and time changed because of a scan? So that means someone actually had to open the file. I'll let him know.

The only other related question, is that some of his files did say they had been accessed last friday arond 8. And that is when norton is setup to scan and no one was around at the time.

Could there be something causing that?

TELL HIM

TO create an account called (his name) and to make this account an admin account. And use a password for it. He can than keep all his private documents in that account and he will be the only one who can access it. when he logs in using that account

takes about 1 minute to do.
All he needs to do is go into administrator tools under control panel. and create users.

He can than create a guest account and not enter a password so all his friends can just type in guest. And hit enter so they can access the PC.

Easy solution

That costs money.

You can check the HIDDEN folder properties so your folder becom,es invisible. But than you have to search for it..LOL!

right click folder select properties tab..under the general tab mark the box that says hidden under attributes. FREE!!
