We put the new flexplate on, dropped the motor, everythings hooked, went to start the car and we hear metal against metal scraping still. The car tries to start but something wont let it. When we tore the motor down we had ZERO smashed plugs, they all looked good. We replaced the springs and retainers also, and the motor turned over fine. The block made ZERO sounds when we manually turn the motor, and EVERY single piston came to the very top of the cylinder. The scraping sound appears to be coming from the flexplate area. It is definately a dry scraping sound. At this point we are baffled and done know which direction to head in. Please help.

We put in brand new flex plate and torque convertor bolts.  We double checked those before we started the car.  So, that is not the problem.  The scraping sound is the same sound the car was making BEFORE we put the new flexplate in.

In theory could it be the starter solonoid not completely engaging the starter, that will cause a metal to metal noise.
