Well, I had an insurance claim last october. I was avoiding a semi that merged in front of me and scuffed the side wall at 60 mph instead of hitting him and probably being dead (truck never stopped, ofcourse) Not hitting him makes it a one car accident and I am responsible for it. Whatever. I renewed with Geico for another 6 months (with a tiny increase of like 80 bucks) and now I get the letter saying Im being dropped. Im pissed. I had a great rate with them with excelent coverage. Apparently they ran the numbers and came to the conclusion that Im "too much of a liability" to cover anymore.

Thinking back, I did come out real well in the deal, because adding up the premiums I paid for 2 years on the car and the claim I made, I took them for around 3500 :p

So, what should I expect when shopping for a new company? How far back to they look at your record for making claims? Whats a good company to look into for a single 26 yr old guy parking on the street in chicago?

I live on the edge of bucktown and wickerpark.... if you can help, that would be great.

I just did an online quote with progressive and they want more for JUST the Bodily Injury and Property Damage protion than what I paid for ALL of my great coverage with Geico....ouch

ive always found geicos rates to be extremely high.
ive called them for dozens of cars ive sold and they were always 50-250% higher than the competition.

be sure to get insurance before the geico drop occurs... if you wait until it occurs then could be more costly...

Surprising they dropped you for 1 accident... though I've never had a claim w/Geico *knock on wood* so not sure if they'd do the same for me... I was happy they'd even insure me for a decent rate (2k/year, dropping to about 1500 when I trun 25 this month) ... I was getting rates of over 5k/year for my GTP and TA from some companies

I pay 900 a year from Liberty mutual on a special Notre Dame grad discout family deal........brother went to ND.....

I also called them up out of curiousity for a 2000-2002 TA ws6 as a 2nd car and said it would be another 600-950 year.

My deductibles are a 1k though...........but that would not be bad having insurance for 2 cars like that for under 2k a year being 22 years old.

Yowza.... I was just complaining to State Farm about my rates because I thought they were too high. I've got three claims totalling about $5000.00 over the last three years and pay $800 per 6 months for the F150 and the GP full coverage $100.00 deductable. I presume the only reason they haven't dropped me is because of my driving record.

Geico blows...I got a quote from them and it was only a little bit cheaper than what I get from SF. The Geico coverage was something like 10/20/10 and I have 100/300/100 from SF for maybe $100 more every 6mos. Price is not everything when it comes to insurance.

called up geico for the hell of it.....they said yes Im being dropped but can sign on with a sister company of theirs for 1100/6 months. I told them I'll think about it.

...Called a local state farm office (never got hold of albert, though) and was quoted 692/6 months if I also got renters insurance through them. I want renters insurance; my last apt. was robbed and I lost 3 grand worth of stuff w/o renters insurance to recover it. Im still shopping, but it looks like I found a good rate with them. My renteres insurance would only be 80/6 months so its stupid not to get it.

at any rate, thanks for the sugestion. I wouldnt be able to think of all the major companies without everyone's input.

Its all because that one recent claim that all these companies quote such high rates. It might also be I moved from the burbs to the city as well. But explain me the logic why someone who made a claim is now labeled as high risk. Who knows, i might not hav to make a claim for another 10 yrs, but for the time being they want to charge a ridiculous amount. I'll never understand that......

Update:

with a week before my Geico policy ends, I found another company i havent gotten a quote from yet and came up with a winner. www.21st.com 21st Century Insurance. Heres what I just signed up for. I think I made out like a bandit with this quote :)

General Coverage
Coverage Limit Buick

Bodily Injury Liability $100,000/300,000 $140.00
Property Damage Liability $100,000 $80.00
Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury $100,000/300,000 $29.00
Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury $100,000/300,000 $29.00
Medical Payments $5,000 $12.00

Vehicle Coverage - 2000 Buick REGAL
Coverage Limits(Deductible) Premium

Comprehensive $500 $34.00
Collision $500 $166.00
Uninsured Motorist Property Damage Coverage Declined $0.00
Rental Reimbursement $25-per day/30-day Max $18.00
Towing and Labor $50 Included

All total, is $509 every 6 months for great coverage. I was so close to going with www.esurance.com till I found reviews saying they jack your rate after you renew, plus their quote was 200 dollars more and for less coverage. I'll have to wait and see what happens when I renew, but even if it goes up 200 clams, I wont mind with this coverage....
