I think i melted a piston in my regal. Im in the process of tearing it down now. But i may have a shop assemble the short block with new parts. Ive already built one L67 and it spun a rod bearing after 5,000 miles. And ive heard nothing but horror stories about 3800's. That once you unbolt the main caps they never live. Long story short, after the L67 spun a bearing i bought a low mile L26 and put my ported heads, cam, blower, ect on it and it ran awesome. Till last week when something let loose. I think its a broke piston. I just dont want to go through all the work to assemble another engine and it spin a bearing again.

Yea, rebuilt 3800's die and with the labor you'll spend at a machine shop you could probably buy 4 used motors. So, go the used motor route, don't try to rebuild it. Unless it's just a cracked ringland and has done ZERO other damage other than that, just toss in a new piston. That can be done without tearing the entire motor apart.

Why did you melt/chip a piston? Bad tune or something?

Im not sure why it happened. Ive been on the current tune for close to a year now. I was in the middle of a three way race (2000's mustang gt and 5th gen camaro ss) I pulled on the mustang with ease, then the camaro came up next to us and we did a three wide pull on RT 83 and at the top of 2nd gear i felt my car kind of loss alittle power then a huge cloud of smoke and oil everywhere. It blew the dipstick out and covered everything under the hood in oil. I think it could be that the fuel filter is clogged. When i went to e85 i changed the filter after a few tanks of e85, but that was over 2 years ago. Of course i pulled my wide band 02 out a week earlier. But atleast i was winning when she let go. haha

Sounds like you cracked a ringland and all of the combustion was leaking straight to the crankcase. You might have chipped a couple pistons from the sounds of it. It also sounds like the car went lean, so I can only assume you're still running a stock pump?

Also, what are the mods to the car if you don't mind me asking and who tuned it?
