3800 Anyone here painted their valve covers?

How'd ya do it?


I've got a spare set, I'm thinking of painting and then putting on when the cam goes in.

Did ya sand them first then primer, paint and clear coat or ????



Any tips would be great.

I did mine when hale did my rockers...I didnt sand, I cleaned them terribly and painted the hell out of them..I was very unprepaired when i did it..we had no cleaners.
I believe Hale stole some 409 household cleaner from his house and I used that and paper towels to wipe them clean..lol

if i could do it over again I will probably do the same steps you are..

Clean
Sand
Prime
Paint
Clear

I also want to do 2 colors...green for the covers and silver for the slots on the top of the covers.

Just clean them really good and paint them. I used a parts cleaner or you can use brakecleaner. I also would recomend engine paint or paint that handles the heat. I don't know if I would sand them. I heard somewhere that if you sand plastic it releases oil. <_< I don't know if that is true or not.

Cleaned with Simple Green®, scuffed with 400 grit, primed, wet sanded w/800 grit, painted, wet sanded, cleared, wet sanded w/1200 grit. I used regular off-the-shelf primer, Martin Senour enamel paint, and off-the-shelf clear and they've held up perfectly.
