3800 SNAP when put in reverse?

As of late when I put the car in reverse there is a SNAP. The car doesnt lunge or shudder any more then most L67s but there is an audible snap.

Now that I think of it Im pretty sure it snaps when ever going from Park into gear. What could that be? Flexplate? Could this be related to my low throttle KR?

Verify the condition of your motor mounts. It sounds like the motor/ trans assembly is hitting something.

also could be the tierods... seems like a few of us are having this issue lately.... check those, and your lower ball joints too.

Thanks for the input. Checking the motor mounts is easy enough but what about the tie rods and lower ball joints? Sorry for the dumb question but what does a bad one look like?

ball join- pull towards the stud. itll move if its bad.

tie rod end. get the wheel off the ground and grab it by both sides, turn it left and right pretty violently- if there is freeplay its bad.

How about your CV shafts...Could be worn...If the boot slipped of or tore its definetly bad....You'll see the grease but if you dont that doesnt mean that its not worn.

Dont go and pull the tie rods.....their probably not the culpret and the outters are tourqe yeild nuts.

If the mounts are suspected. Brake tourqe the car....Not a burn out. Hold your foot on the brake well and bump the accelerater. If you feel the engine flop or there is excessive travel check the rubber for cracks or if see if it is torn off the mounting plate.

I think it is a front motor mounts. Major engine flop when the car is shifted into gear. I guess my 2.0* lanuches have taken their toll.

Everything else looked ok, but I dont know.

We also checked out the flexplate, it was perfect, bolts seemed tight, no broken welds, or scratches or galling.

If it's the uppers, get SnM's mounts. I can also show you a way to modify the uppers to lock them.

Its a Buick Riviera, which means Ill have to make my own. <_<


BTW if anyone has a few rivi mounts left over from an engine swap, Im interested. I need something to use as a template.

Are the riv mounts like the full-size? If so there is a little "shock absorber" type damper right by the starter. This may be causing some issues.

Yeah there is a lower mount at each corner and one on the passenger side.

Here is the fix. Seems to work good, much less flop. Now I have to make one for the rear.
