The way to do it is fill the cylinder with compressed air to hold up the valve. That isn't a ton of spring pressure. On the older V8's I use to just put a socket over the retainer and push it down, I'd put a pick up magnet in the socket to grab the locks, done. This is the easiest way to do it if it works on these cars.

That's what alot of peops are using on LS1s... should work in the GP motor as well I'd think... very simple tool (could prolly even make yourself if you have the equipment) and works VERY well for doing in car valve spring swaps

I would imgaine they'll work on the 3800s... but anyone here have any opinions on it? would it work?
