3800 Guru's Help

So my mother's car has had the loose gas cap on the display. check engine light came on recently for leak in evap system. Googled it and it seems like it is the purge valve or solenoid. Guy at parts counter gave me this but it doesn't seem to be on this model.

The 04+ has that on the display now?

A loose gas cap can trigger a SES light. Either tighten, or get a new one before you throw money at other parts.

The gas caps are the weak point in the 04+ Grand prix's. Aftermarket gas cap won't do the trick. You will need a GM gas cap. Find s cheap dealer or ebay. The evap canister is in up under the rear bumper by the gas door.

Without knowing part number or anything like that there is really no other way to answer you

tightening doesn't work

Geez , can't seem to remember the outcome when I had this issue in my 04.

my moms regal had the same problem... but she has a 98 regal with 235k on the original everything... annnnd I didn't want to work onit.... soooo hptuners $100 worth of credits.... kj out.

Any leak in the hose or anything involving the evap will give the same code I believe

Yup. I'd look for someone to do a smoke test on the system

I still say start with new GM gas cap. I can't remember the code mine was throwing. But I do remember the info center telling me something about the gas cap. $35.00 fix.

My 06 did this and a new gas cap did not fix the problem. I needed a EVAP part that was under the rear drivers side bumper area near the gas fill tube. Easy was to get to that part is to take the wheel off then take the wheel house liner out

Replaced purge valve soleniod, cel and tighten gas cap are now gone. Obviously disconnected the battery, maybe ecm reset cleared it temporarily. Will update if it comes back.

p0445 is a code for the purge control valve, which is what 1quick posted (the electrical part the evap hose plugs into). i'd try replacing that, first.

circuit failure codes usually come back right away (unless it's an intermittent failure) i bet you nailed it replacing the purge valve

Cel came back on, replaced gas cap but didn't go away. Any suggestions on what I should do next? I don't wanna throw the whole parts catalog at it.

As suggested above, do a smoke test and find your leak.
