Changing valve springs...air coming out of ports

I'm changing valve springs on my new motor so I can put my can in. It's a 96 l67 with about 185k miles. I was using air to keep the valves up. On the second cylinder, I noticed a large amount of air coming out of the intake port. I unhooked the air, and gave the valve a few taps with a hammer. It was much better, but was still allowing some air through.

Is the valve supposed to seal absolutly perfect? I've never noticed this before on a motor when changing springs.

Was it leaking air before you took the spring off ?

I would assume it was since he took the air off and "gave it a few taps with a hammer". They're definitely not supposed to leak. Might be a worn guide, burnt valve, etc.

Yes. I actually have not removed that spring yet. Just hooked up the air, and noticed something wasn't right.

I don't think intake valves will typically burn. If the cracks between the valves are deep enough, it would leak into the coolant jacket, right?

its very likely that its rust built up on the valve seat from the valve being open....its possible that the rust will just work its way out after its started....or not if its bad enough

Gonna guess that if tapping helps seals it, the guides are worn.

nah its likely rust or a dead mouse.

ive seen the rust issue with countless junkyard motors....it;ll startup with a missfire and after a minute of pounding the rust out of the way everything seals up...

I don't see any way possible it's the guides. The motor came out of a running car about a year ago. Since, it's just been sitting. I guess I'll continue to throw the 130# springs on, and assume it's rust build up. Tapping it with a hammer makes it better, so it should work.

Motors run all the time with worn guides. The valve just rocks a little bit. And it could create sealing issues.
