Here are some pictures of the Grand Am replacement, the new G6.
Sedan is the first one out in late 2004, then in 2005 comes the coupe and late 2005 my next car, the coupe hard top retractable convertible.
Pontiac revealed the G6 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
It goes on sale in Fall 2004. Additional models of the G6 will follow, including a 2+2 sports coupe and a convertible.

The G6’s total performance attributes include:

- All-new family of performance oriented powertrains, including a 170-horsepower HO 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder, 200-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 and 240-horsepower HO 3.9-liter V-6
- Sophisticated, electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode standard on GT model
- European-designed high performance six-speed manual transmission available with 3.9 V-6
- Class-leading 112.3-inch wheelbase, enabling fresh, contemporary styling, exceptional ride and handling, and generous rear seat leg room
- Four-wheel sport-tuned independent suspension, with MacPherson strut front suspension, four-link independent rear suspension, variable-assist electric power steering, full function traction control, and a range of 16-, 17-, and 18-inch performance wheels and tires

- GM’s global Epsilon architecture with cross-car magnesium beam results in 27.3 Hz bending frequency which provide rigidity and body stiffness for quiet, solid and more responsive ride and handling characteristics
- Engaging, driver-oriented interior with sporty, refined controls and instrument layout; tilt and telescoping steering column; available adjustable pedals; highly bolstered, body-hugging seats; automatic climate control; racing-style gauges with true-red LED instrument backlighting; and premium sound system with in-dash 6-CD changer
- Market-exclusive Panoramic roof, which features four sliding glass panels to create a convertible-style open-air driving experience
- Contemporary, sensuous design with upscale refinement and attention to detail
- Outstanding quality, reliability and safety, including standard dual-stage air bags, and available side- and head curtain air bags

Pontiac comes clean with new G6

Published January 5, 2004

DETROIT -- Pontiac has cleaned up its act.

The Grand Am with all of its plastic body cladding will be replaced by the G6 this fall as an '05 model.

Plastic cladding had become a sore subject at Pontiac.

"We became the king of cladding when cladding had hit the wall," said Lynn Myers, Pontiac-GMC general manager, "[the G6] is more contemporary looking for younger buyers."

The G6 was unveiled at a media preview of the Detroit Auto Show a day after Pontiac confirmed the Solstice roadster will go on sale in the fall of '05 as an '06 model.

The G6, which sports a front end that brings back memories of the Firebird, is built off the Epsilon platform, same as the Chevrolet Malibu and Saab 9-3.

The 112.3-inch wheelbase is 5 inches longer than the Grand Am, length grows 3 inches, to 189 inches, and width expands by 1 inch, to 70.6 inches.

In addition to moving the wheels forward, Pontiac widened the tracking for better road stance and stability.

G6 will be offered in sedan, coupe and convertible. The sedan arrives first, the coupe a few months later and then the convertible, though it may be the '06 model year before the drop-top appears.

There will be base, GT and GTP versions, all with front-wheel-drive, though don't rule out all-wheel-drive.

Gene Stefanyshyn, vehicle line executive for the G6, pointed out that the Epsilon platform is all-wheel-drive capable. Insiders expect at least one G6 and at least one Chevy Malibu, probably the Maxx, are candidates for AWD.

G6 is aimed at attracting buyers from Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima, none of which offer AWD.

"AWD is the furniture people are looking for," said Mark Hogan, group vice president of advance vehicle development for General Motors.

Ford thinks so, too. The '05 Ford Five Hundred and Mercury Montego midsize sedans feature AWD.

Base and GT models will be powered by a 3.5-liter, 200-horsepower V-6 delivering 220 foot-pounds of torque and teamed with a 4-speed automatic with manual mode shifting on the GT.

Later in the model year a GTP sedan and eventually a coupe will be added with a 3.9-liter, 240-h.p. V-6 delivering 245 foot-pounds of torque teamed with the manual mode automatic or a 6-speed manual.

Eventually the GTP will feature displacement-on-demand to shut down cylinders to boost fuel economy.

There's talk of supercharging the G6, "but not the first year," an insider said.

For '06, the base G6 will add a 2.4-liter, 170-h.p. 4-cylinder with 4-speed automatic to give Pontiac a price leader.

To give each model different character, there's a choice of suspensions as well as different tires, 16-inch on the base model, 17-inch on the GT/GTP and 18-inch optional performance summer radials on the GTP.

Options include power adjustable brake/gas pedals, remote engine start, XM satellite radio, OnStar emergency communication system, side impact/side curtain air bags and a power sunroof with four glass panels that lift and slide back layer upon layer.

Yeah the coupe and convert look really good in that small fuzzy pic, but I did not think Gm was going to release those 2 pictures til next year.. so you never know... I don't know if GM Insidde News is a reliable source or not. But the covertible looks good, hope they offer it in some good colors as that will 99% be my next car.
