61-Year-Old Arrested For Husband's Murder
Indiana Woman Admits To Slaying By Injection

UPDATED: 6:58 p.m. CST November 11, 2003

CHICAGO -- A 61-year-old Indiana woman was charged Monday with the murder of her husband.

Barbara Joy Garcia, 61 (pictured at her arrest), told police that she "decided that she would have to kill her husband," before he discovered that she had withdrawn $4,000 from their savings account to cover gambling losses and to help out her financially troubled daughter, according to NBC5's Charlie Wojciechowski.

The Times of Northwest Indiana newspaper reported that police and family members said it wasn't the first time she gambled away sizeable chunks of the couple's savings.

According to the published report, Garcia repeatedly injected her husband of 43 years, Cipriano Garcia, 71, with insulin until he was dead, then stashed his body in the garage for three days while she got her hair done and gave out Halloween candy.

She then allegedly persuaded her daughter, Tammy Garcia, to help her wrap the body in a tarp secured with an extension cord and drive it to a wooded area in Bloom Township, Ill., where it was dumped.

Garcia apparently told her daughter that her stepfather had died of natural causes and that she wanted to hide his death so she could continue to collect his pension checks.

Police initially planned to arrest Barbara Garcia at her husband's funeral Monday, "but while Cipriano Garcia's family gathered at a Lake Station funeral home to remember his life, his wife of 43 years was noticeably absent," the paper reported.

Less than 15 minutes after the funeral ended, police arrived at the couple's tiny aqua-colored home and took her into custody.

Authorities said Barbara Garcia began the process of killing her husband on Oct. 30 by offering to make him coffee and lacing it with some of her medication, causing him to fall asleep. The former licensed practical nurse at Porter Memorial Hospital then began injecting her husband's body with insulin.

Between injections, she took his pulse, then continued giving him the shots until his heart stopped.

Wojciechowski said Tammy and Barbara Garcia dumped Cipriano Garcia's body on Nov. 2. The body was discovered by an Illinois resident about 12:30 p.m. the next day in an area along the banks of a pond near Burnham Avenue and Sauk Trail.

The published report indicated that, In addition to the murder charge filed Monday, Barbara Garcia may face an Illinois charge of concealing a homicide, police said.

Hobart Police Chief Brian Snedecor said Barbara Garcia admitted to the slaying early Thursday morning. In the days following the confession, Snedecor said detectives notified and interviewed additional family members.

Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter said Tammy Garcia's involvement is being reviewed, although no decision has been made on whether to file charges.
