So I need a new windshield!

So my windshield has a nice hairline crack running through the bottom of it and I don't trust it. I need to have it replaced. Normally, id just call a local shop and have them come out and fix it, which is not a problem. What I really would like to do though is with the windshield removed, remove the HUD board and re-solder the area that supposedly comes loose. Right now, during the day the HUD is barely visible, but at night it is fine.

Also, what would you guys recommend? Should I go new or should I try to save some cash and look for a used one? I did have someone come out a year back and fill in a bullseye crack, and he said that because of the HUD, the windshield is special and actually is more expensive than a normal one. Is this true?

Does anyone have a used one around and would want to open the dash to remove the HUD unit? I tried it once with the windshield in and it was a PITA. I couldn't do it

Liability only but I know from my brothers car (same insurance with full coverage) the deductible was $300... And his windshield ended up costing $300 lol

State Farm, I get 1 windshield a year with no deductible.

Call allstar or Aron auto glass. Aron is usually cheaper got a windshield not long ago for a 10 dodge caravan installed for around 200 bucks

whats sketchy about windshield removal is how they do it- if you have a car you liek- i'd be really careful about just calling a random place...

they typically wind up scratching the paint with their saws beneath the windshield- then if any water comes in contact with here- it rusts and creates much bigger problems down the road.

imo that's an old wives tale... sure the hud specific glass has to be "perfect" or whatever...

my car doesn't have it and has the windshield tinted and i can see the hud just fine...

IIRC the HUD windsheild is a different part number from GM. But people have put HUD into non HUD cars and have seen it with no problem

The hud windshield has a film inbeded in it the help the hud display. I had mine replaced 2 years ago for $200.00 by Armstrong glass.

a regular windshield will work fine. the HUD wont show up well during the day, but you will be fine at night.

thats not true tho... my car you couldn't tell the difference between hud glass and not- hud glass is just "perfect" no blemishes anywhere in it that would make the hud appear distorted or something...

hud is just grade A units of the bunch that are produced
same way that energizer or duracell branded batteries are the grade A's and the rest become walmart/offbrand

Advanced Auto Glass off Wise Rd does some pretty good work. No complaints about them! Can't answer your question though...

HUD windshields do have some kind of coating to help keep glare down.
