ignition swap

My ingnition is junk and always gets stuck. I have to poke it with a screw driver thru the hole in the column to get the key to turn all the way off. What all is involved in swapping it? I've done it in my SHO, but that didn't have a chip in the key or whatever. How do I reprogram, and would my remote start be effected?

It is most likely not the ignition but the shiftier instead. There is a switch on the bottom of the shiftier assembly that goes bad.

Never had to replace an ignition on any of the Grand Prix I have owned. It has always been the shiftier assembly causing the key to get stuck.

one well placed ziptie on the lockout lever arm and all your worries disapear...though you can pull the key out with the shifter in N so dont go letting your car roll away cause you cheesed on putting it into park

this is actually caused by a solinoid on the ignition switch. pushing the botton on the bottom of the column actually just moves the solenoid plunger.

You can open the column and just remove the solenoid, I did this about 5 years ago, no ill effects yet.

Once the plastic parts on the column are off, it is really easy to see how the solinoid is attached and how it can be removed. It is the big white thing on the back of the ignition switch, 2 or 3 bolts hold it on.

its easier to use 1 zip tie at the base of the shifter to hold that lever down that you press with a key through the slot.

Have a picture of this? I have this issue everyone once in a while and would like to fix this before its a big issue.

there are prob some around but once you get the shifter trim off and look at it youll see exactly what im talking about.

the lever/tab that you press down on with the key is a 90* bellcrank, the lower leg of which is parallel with the shifter shaft, wrap zip tie around shaft and lower leg of bellcrank, pull tight, trim off excess, IROR

just remember that you must have it in park, there will no longer be an interlock for "stupid people" so you can pull the key out with the shifter in any position

I had the same problem on two different GS's. Both were the shifter. Take the shifter cover off, clean up all the gunk and spray it down with WD-40.

Next time the key gets stuck, try working the shifter back and forth. If that lets the key out, you know where the problem is.

Mine has done this for probably four years. I can flick the thing under the column quick as shit and lately it has gotten better... Before always got stuck... Now 80 percent of the time it does

My key will already come out at any time nor do I need to have my foot on the brake to come out of park. The car has the performance shift button which I was told did not come on 02s? The wire for the light came unhooked I think tho.

Its so odd because the ignition will work fine for a week or two. Then start doing this every time. Ill take a look at the shifter but prob not until after the SHO convention.

IIRC it was just a wire connector and 2 - 3 tiny bolts. If you can't get it out of there, James's zip tie method held me over for over a year before I removed.

Mine went bad, I used the Zip tie fix
