Understood. I did read it and i'm familiar with Keto. I agree that it has numerous health benefits, especially for people that are diabetic or have very low insulin sensitivity. The restrictions on carbs and protein result in an immediate, and normally very large, calorie deficit.

The main problem I have with keto is that it's rare for people preaching this diet to ever teach someone how to manage a total calorie deficit/surplus. More importantly, you don't normally hear about how to successfully end the cutting phase once your calories are bottomed out (after you've lost the desired amount)

I understand that your body is burning fat, but if you go from consuming 4000 calories/day before keto to 2500/day on keto, that is a sharp and unsafe decrease. You'll drop weight like crazy and your body will be in ketosis, but your metabolism will slow WAY down to keep you from practically passing out due to lack of fuel. Add in the fact that your sodium, potassium, and magnesium also decrease on a keto diet and it's an easy diet to mismanage.

Then...when you've lost the weight you want to lose...what's next? Are you going to switch to a balanced diet and slowly increase calories, or do what most people do and say "i lost 100 lbs, goal met, no more keto" with no knowledge of what their calorie intake has been over the last several months. More often than not, it's the latter, which is why it's common to bounce back HARD.

That's why i always interject in these threads to make sure people are thinking about more than just being in ketosis and losing their goal weight.

In order for ketosis to work, you need to be taking in less fat from calories than you are burning. This will always be true. Im consistently eating 1400 or so calories from fat a day, and I have been losing quite a bit of weight. Its been steady.
I dunno how i missed this post originally, but it's spot on. And yes it's hard for people to get.

This is the keto struggle. You have to salt everything practically and you also need to take a decent multivitamin. I do this, and I seem to be balanced out good.

As for what happens when you reach your goal weight. Well this is something you may not understand because I assume you are not a fat guy. Being a fat guy, means you over ate and didnt exercise. And keep in mind it took me almost 20 years to get where I was.

With that being said, you cant go back to what you were doing pre keto. You need much less than you were taking in before. But you can still eat what you want going forward. People think they can go back to how they were eating before. I know I wont. This is a lifestyle change Im in now. I wont be eating triple cheese burgers either. I will be eating what I love in great moderation, but this time around adding in exercise and those dreaded other super foods I dont like. I take more pride in what Im putting in my body and I want to stay lean. If you dont get into this mind set, you are doomed to yoyo.

Keto has been great for me because I LOVE these fatty foods. But you cannot eat like this if you are not in ketosis. Then you are asking for high cholesterol and heart disease. Without ketosis, you will be storing all that stuff in your arteries.

My problem was I put on the weight quickly.
I worked a very physical, dangerous job, 6'2" 185 for decades. I was never over weight my entire life.
Then my wife became terminal and I quit working immediately.
We ate out at least 2 meals a day, sometimes 3, and we went to a lot of casino buffets.
She wanted a banana split, I took her for a banana split.
She wanted cake for dinner, we had cake for dinner.
I went from 185 and strong, to 262 and weak in less then a year.

Now I need my knee replaced and the Doctor keeps giving me a hard time for being fat,
so I started the no sugar/carbs deal and I have never been so full in my life.
Like I said, I don't count anything, I stuff myself every meal and lost 44 lbs, which is frigging amazing!!!!

I don't know why other than what I read, but it sure as hell works great.
4 cheeseburgers and big ass bowl of jello for supper, and I bet when I wake up, my weight will not go up???

Everyone was laughing at me when I said screw it and had an omelette for lunch thursday.
Most of them have fat guts, so I decided to work even harder.
As they eat phillys, cheese burgers and milk shakes, I ate low carb, no sugar and a glass of water.

Portillos double cheeseburger and soup and water
Burrito bowl. Double steak easy rice
McDonald's 2 scrambled eggs and 2 sausage
Taco salad with turkey meat, lettuce, taco sauce, cheese and 5 or less chips crunched and sprinkled on top

That's basically what I have been eating all week. Today is 1 week and I am down about 7 pounds. It's great.
