I'm really curious who Nagy hires as his OC. Not that they'll be play calling anyways, but a QB focused OC would be ideal. Nagy is going to have full team responsibilities, so probably won't be able to dedicate himself just to the offensive side of the ball. An experienced QB coach would also be good. Need to surround Trubisky with plenty of support. A experience backup would also be a huge plus (not Mark Sanchez). Maybe Matt Moore or Ryan Fitzpatrick? Obviously, neither are starters, but both have a ton of experience.

Nagy has hired Notre Dame Offensive Line coach Harry Hiestand to that same job on the Bears. Hiestand is respected as being one of the best OL coaches in the game. He coached on the Bears during the Lovie Smith era. Big loss for ND and big win for Nagy's first hire.

Here's how well he trained the ND guys. This block is awesome.

I’m not excited about whomever became the Bear’s coach.

Picking up 3 solid receivers, good pass rusher and outside linebacker, along with improving the offensive line, is what would excite me.

No chef will be successful if he is working with shitty ingredients.

I would say the Bears just need tackles, their interior OL is one of the leagues best when healthy (problem is they’re rarely healthy)

Receiver is obviously probably top need. You have Inman and Meredith which could be nice 2nd and 3rd string type of guys, but need a true #1.

Corner is something that isn’t getting a lot of press, that the Bears need to get better and lock down. Fuller and Prince Amukymura are both free agents this year.

You can never have enough pass rushers, and if there’s a good one on the board, you better believe they should take him.

Bears are hiring Chris Tabor, Cleveland's Special Team's coach, for the same position on the Bears. This pick could go either way. Tabor assisted Toub a decade ago on the Bears and did pretty well in Cleveland up until this year. He has to be happy to be out of that town. Let's see if he can bring the Toub Special Teams experience back to Chicago.

Browns fans are happy to see him go which is not so encouraging. That makes 2 coaches hired so far with former Bears connections. They're getting the band back together.

Mike Mulligan is reporting the Bears are close to hiring Mark Helfrich, former coach of the Oregon Ducks. Helfrich was Chip Kelly's assistant at Oregon and then took over when Kelly left. He had 3 good years but a terrible final season at 4 - 8. Overall record was 37 - 16.

Man, if Helfrich comes here the Bears Offense is going to explode into action next year. Oregon was known for putting up 50 - 60 points per game.

Read this for some details on what Helfrich brings to the table.

Eehhh, NFL defenses are too fast for most college style offenses. I like the quick pace and his offense seems to mirror what the Chiefs were doing; leaning on the run, short and quick passes, and only taking minimal shots downfield. The offense also relies on mobile QB which Trubisky has already demonstrated.

I just hope the rest of the personnel on the roster can fit that style of offense. I know that Cohen and Howard should be deadly.

I was REALLY hoping Toub would come back, especially with the KC connection to Nagy.

As to explosive offenses, wasn't this what Trestman was supposed to be about, albeit he didn't have some of the pieces needed. Please don't laugh at that, but that was what he was brought here for with Cutler's arm. But NFL defenses quickly figured that out and shut down his overcomplicated schemes on top of Cutler's eyes being read easily by defenses.

There's no way to tell what the Bears will be like until we see them in 2018.

What I am seeing so far, at least on paper, is that the Fox/Loggains game plan of death by conservatism with rare trick plays thrown in is going to radically change into a fast paced Offense with zone blocking taught by one of the best OL coaches in the league. Trubisky is going to throw a ton of short passes. I can see the Bears wearing down Defenses once they build themselves up to where they can handle Helfrich's fast paced games. Maybe the conditioning will help with injuries, too?

Oh, I won't disagree with you there on the change from the death by conservatism play book.

What I hope is that the defense stays as good (and healthy) in addition because then mammories of '85 dance around in my head...

I'm starting to look at 2018 draft talent. IF there are no worthy WR or OL picks at 8, the Bears could decide to take the next Butkus/Singletary/Urlacher. MLB Roquan Smith is super agile and quick, has good football smarts, ran his Georgia D as a Junior and is like a guided missile heading for the ball carrier. Bears could do worse than take their next All Pro middle linebacker.

OK, Vic Fangio has re-signed with the Bears. Bears D will, hopefully, continue to be top 10 in the league. Now let's get the O working.

Quote:
LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Chicago Bears have agreed to a new deal with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, the team announced.

Fangio's contract is for three years, a league source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

I'm impressed with Nagy so far. He has jumped in and taken advantage of being the first coach hired (am I forgetting anyone? Gruden?) to go out and grab highly respected talent for his coaching staff. On paper, the staff already looks much better than what Fox was using. More so, as Nagy said himself, "no egos" should be involved. He proved that by retaining Vic Fangio who, IMO, is the best choice for the Bears DC. An ego guy would have dumped Fangio and brought someone else in as their guy. It's good to see Nagy understands you don't fix what isn't broken. With half a dozen starters out, Fangio still managed to put the Bears D in the top 10. Good enough for me.

Bears are keeping QB coach Dave Ragone. He's the only Offensive coach being retained by the Bears.

Eehh, there wasn't much in the way of QB coach talent out there. I'm OK with this, especially if Trubisky likes him and Nagy can Ragone's philosophy's match.

I'm happy to see them basically clean house on the Offensive side of the staff. Ragone is good enough that his staying shouldn't hurt. The continuity may actually help Trubisky.

Now, let's start thinking Free Agency. You guys have any Free Agents you would like to see come to the Bears?

Off the top of my head, I wouldn't mind seeing them sign Miami WR Jarvis Landry. He's probably in the top 2 of WRs who will be available (Allen Robinson is the other).

Landry is a catch and run type receiver who likes the short, quick passes which would fit in with Trubisky's style of passing. I don't know if he deserves WR1 money but he and Robinson will probably get it.

I like Allen Robinson more than Landry for the Bears. The Bears need a large possession receiver. Then again, they also need a deep ball threat.

Retaining or getting quality corners should be a top priority. Inside and outside linebacker depth would also be up there in priority.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there will be any starting OT worth going after, but depth wouldn't hurt.

Also, Mark Sanchez is an impending free agent and Glennon is likely gone too, which means the Bears need to pick up a viable backup. A veteran presence would be ideal. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Matt Moore are quality backups with a lot of starting experience. In the event the Trubisky goes down, they would definitely be viable options.

Robinson is likely to re-sign with the Jaguars. They're too close to a SB to let him go. I'd be happy to take him if he does not sign in Jacksonville.

Miami has been trying to trade Landry all season which leads me to think they will not be re-signing him. Bears may be the front runners for picking him up.

We saw in 2017 that LB depth is a big issue. Definitely pick up one or two depth guys and try to get one star. (In the draft, I'd take the next Mike Singletary/Urlacher guy, Roquan Smith, from Georgia.) Bears do well when they have a middle LB who dominates. Put him out there with Freeman and you'd have one of the best ILB teams in the league.

OTs are SO hard to find. I'd spend the farm if anyone becomes available either in FA or the draft who is worth it.

QB is actually easier. There will be guys available at much less than Glennon's $13 Mil. Your choices are good.

There's a lot of guys that could be available at #8. And with so many QB's that are projected top 5, there is going to be some elite talent available to the Bears at #8. To me, that pick should be 100% best player on the board, regardless of position or team need. There's not a spot on the roster that the Bears couldn't use a big time playmaker.

If the value isn't there, trade back. Pace is notoriously aggressive that high in the draft, but he needs to look at the value of the picks and the areas the team needs to get better in. I think there will be teams still trying to scramble up for players. We could get lucky and still pick up the receiver or corner we'd want by trading down.

You guys know I'm a homer for the Bears but I'm psyched about the new coaching staff on the Bears. The word, around the league as well as from the Bears is that they have assembled some talented coaches.

The coaches, themselves, are, for the most part, talking logically about what they want to do unlike some previous Bears coaches that had me shaking my head at their comments.

The Bears now have K.C.'s offensive coordinator as HC. Matt Nagy put together a pretty good Offense with Andy Reid. He had the weapons of Kareem Hunt, Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill. Bears have Jordan Howard, Shaheen and Tarik Cohen. Shaheen needs to get better (or get a top TE in the 2nd round?). Jordan and Cohen will be plugged into the KC style Offense. Add to that the OC who is the guy who worked with Chip Kelly to put together Oregon's stellar Offense. Could be interesting if Trubisky can learn the complicated system these guys will install. He is a threat to run and has good progression with his reads. He's also accurate so there's hope for him to turn into a good/great starting QB.

The Bears Offense will be a lot more wide open with more spread formations and some college plays thrown in. That should be more in Trubisky's comfort zone (and a lot more fun to watch). Fox tried to fit Trubisky into the Bears conservative plan rather than crafting a plan around Trubisky's strengths.

Can't wait for Free Agency and the draft...

Bears dumped head athletic trainer, Nate Breske, strength and conditioning coach Jason George and assistant strength coach Rick Perry. Pace says he's going to study how healthy teams get and stay that way.
