Quite literally I couldn't stand on my feet this morning..

some of you may remember my MRI from Feb with the herniated and bulging discs.

well 4 months later it's still bothering me on and off, I still haven't had a pain free week.

over the last 4 months my primary Dr. has given me a Cortisone shot, and another non-steriodal shot.... he's also prescribed: Prednizone, Celebrex, Cyclobenzaprine, Naproxen, and Hydrocodone (Vicoden)

Nothing has worked for more than a couple of days, he's getting frustrated and so am I.

So last week I went to see a Chiropracter.. I seemed to be getting better after each of the first four session...

After yesterday's session I felt a bit sore, which was wierd because I had been pain free the last two days.. About 2 hours after my Chiro visit I got a mild throbing pain, and as the day progressed the pain got worse and worse. By bed time it was almost unbearable to move.

This morning, it took me 10 mins to be able to sit up in bed, and another 30 mins to put any pressure on my feet.. I then hobled to the bathroom.

It's loosened up a little now, and my drug cocktail is kicking in.

The worst part is, that the one drug that actually relieves the pain, my doctor is the most stubborn about prescribing.

He prescribes me a 20 count of 5/325 hydrocodone (Generic Norco/Vicoden).. I have to take two of those at the same time to feel anything.. and each time I need a refill I have to call him to write another script... to make matters worse that last refill he told me he has to to a full physical before he can write another prescription...

Sorry, but I just needed to vent.

Have you thought about seeing another doctor,
and 20 pills at a time? I know they can be addictive,
but you are obviously in alot of pain, have they
tried hydrocodone back to back with 800mg Ibuprofen yet?
It took car of most of the pain, and the ibuprofen took the sweeling done.

This is the method they took when Alan fell from the ladder at work
back in december, hope you feel better...and soon :biggthump

Not 20 pills at one time... the perscription is for a 20 count of 5/325 hydrocodone..... When I'm in pain I take 2 at a time, and usually space ity out 4-6hrs... my point is with a 20 count prescription, I can go through the whole bottle in a week. I've gotten 5 refills over the last 4 months and my Dr. is now giving me a hard time about another refill.

I use Naproxen for the swelling (anti-Inflamatory) it's a lot stronger than Ibuprofen, which I've tried in the past with little or no success.

I've had back pain for about 10 years now... typically I get it pretty bad 2 - 3 times a year, and the bouts only last a week or so, and then I'm back to normal... but this one has lasted since late January, which is why my Dr and I are concerned.

Over the course of the last 10 years I've seen 3 Dr. and 2 Chiropracters for my back... the Dr's always gave mr anti-inflamitory, muscle relaxer and pain meds.. they said I can either deal with it or get surgery... I don't want back surgery unless it's the absolute last resort... The Chiropracters insist on me going there every week for the rest of my life so that I can fund their kids college expenses.

I was taking 2 hydrocodone every 4 hours for 3 months. They didn't do anything for me. I did the steroids 7-6-5-4-3-2-1, the muscle relaxer and then the Naproxen. The Naproxen worked for me but it took 4 months before it began to work.

The Hydrocodone, is about the only things that helps me... but since it's a schedule III narcotic, my Dr, is anal retentive about prescribing it, even though nothing else has worked.

The Naproxen hasn't done a thing for me, I've been on it for two months (on and off)

You can't stay on the pain meds forever so you'll have to address the cause of the pain one way or another. It sounds like the chiropracter screwed up on your most recent visit. He must have pulled when he should have pushed or something like that.

You may have to look around for the best back Dr. you can find and see what they recommend. You can't live with pain forever and the chiropracter is just treating the symptoms.

How about physical therapy? I see people with back problems come through there frequently.

I sleep on a heating pad at night when my back acts up,
and sometimes take Vicoden if the pain is bad enough,
mine is from a back surgery when I was young,
getting into a car accident annoyed it 5-6 years ago, and with my little one being handicapped, I have to pick her up and move her all the time,
so that'll do it.

Jack I hope they find a good solution for you, it may be a good idea just to go and get the surgery so your pain will stop, your too young for all that,
and the meds over time can mess up the liver/etc. becareful ;)

two beers will perk up that vicodin just dandy

I use to drink 6+ beers + took 12 vicodin's a day for 3 months. I swear it did nothing. Pain pills have never helped me, I get better results from ibuprofen. But then again, thats me. I got lucky w/ the Naproxen, but again, it took over 3 months for any relief and then another three before I was back to normal.

Naproxen is just Advil. I have been on it for close to a year with little effect. I have to admit, some days it works, others it doesn't. But I still only take it so I can prolong surgery on my elbow.

I know how you guys feel...same pains, different place.

Jack, I talked to my sister in law who is a Nurse. My brother had back surgery a couple years ago. She found the best Dr. available for him. His name is Dr. Amine. He works out of Christ Hospital and St. Francis Hospital. According to her, he is one of the best and has a high success rate for his back treatments and surgeries. It took my brother a while to get better after surgery but he is doing well now. Before the surgery, he had pain in his back and all the way down his leg. If you do decide to go the surgery route, this is one Dr. to keep in mind. Dr. Amine.

I just talked to my mom she is a surgical nurse at christ hospital. She has had herniated disks and other back problems and the doctor she went to is retired. But she gave me another recommendation for you. It is Dr. Keith Schiable he is a head and back specialist at christ hospital. He also is one of the top doctors at christ hospital.

He performed a triple anorism(spelling) on my father in a emergency procedure, if he hadn't my father would have died. My dad was back to work within 3 months of the procedure and the scaring is all gone.

I would check Schiable, my mom said he is one of the best and has one of the best recovery rates out there. She said amine is good but Schiable in her opinion is one of the best.

Don't put the pain off anymore go see a doctor and get something done about it my mom messed around with her back and everytime she waited she ended up in a ambulance because she could not move because the pain was to great.

I've known a lot of people w/ back problems. It seems everyone is different, some respond to pills, some epidurals, some chiropractors, etc. I can also say of the 3 ~ 4 people that I knew that went under the knife, none of them regret it. Just the opposite, they wished they had not waited so long. But there is also no reason to go under the knife if a less invasive method will help reduce or eliminate the pain.
