Manny time: Ramirez-to-Sox a done deal

http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/08/ramirez-could-add-big-bat-to-middle-of-soxs-order.html

The White Sox were awarded controversial slugger Manny Ramirez on Monday on a waiver claim from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Sox acquired Ramirez via a simple waiver transaction, with no trade for prospects involved. That means the Sox would have to pay all of the approximately $3.5 million remaining on Ramirez's contract.

Ramirez isn't expected to be in the Sox's lineup, which will be posted shortly. In a corresponding move, pitcher Jake Peavy was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. The Sox won't need to make a move on their 25-man roster to make room for Ramirez until he arrives.

"What's wrong with a little flair, a little character and having a little fun in the process?" Sox general manager Ken Williams said of the Ramirez acquisition.

Williams said no promises were made regarding a contract for 2011. As for how the team's grooming standards will mesh with Ramirez's appearance, Williams said, "From my understanding, it won't be an issue. He'll conform to how we want our players represented out there."

Vote: Will the addition help the White Sox topple the Twins?
When Ramirez does join the Sox's lineup as the designated hitter, most likely on Tuesday, the batting order could look like this:

Pierre lf

Vizquel 3b

Ramirez dh

Konerko 1b

Rios cf

Quentin dh

Pierzynski c

Ramirez ss

Beckham 2b

Buehrle p

Ramirez often batted behind Vizquel in the Indians' batting order before leaving Cleveland after the 2000 season to play for Boston.

Ramirez will join the Sox in the city where he began his career in 1993. Ramirez hit 236 home runs with Cleveland. He is a lifetime .312 hitter with 132 home runs in 493 career games at Progressive Field. In 59 games at U.S. Cellular Field, Ramirez is batting .338 with 15 home runs and 50 RBIs.

Ramirez wore jersey number 99 in Los Angeles, but that was only because the Dodgers retired No. 24 that was worn by legendary manager Walter Alston. No Sox player has worn a number higher than No. 73 -- worn by Tony Phillips in 1997. The last Sox player to wear No. 24 was Joe Crede in 2008.
