HS students' suspension over gun range photo ignites uproar, potential lawsuit | NJ.com

A New Jersey school district that allegedly suspended two high school students this week over a gun photo taken during a family visit to a private shooting range is facing community backlash and the threat of a lawsuit over district policies.

The photo of four rifles, magazines and a gun duffel bag was shared by one of the students on the social media app Snapchat with the caption "fun day at the range," according to Lacey Township resident Amanda Buron, a family friend of one of the students.

A screen capture of the image made the rounds among other students and later brought to the attention of Lacey Township High School officials. Buron said the students received a five-day in-school suspension for violating the school's policy on weapons possession.

The Lacey school district quietly changed a policy last week that prohibited students from legally handling a gun off campus after being threatened with a lawsuit by a gun advocacy organization.

Though the district denied it disciplined two students after one posted a photo of firearms at a range, a family friend said the boys received five days of in-school suspension. One of the boys also said in a Facebook post that he and his friend were punished.

The discipline against the students ignited an uproar on social media and could lead to a big turnout at a board education meeting Monday evening at Lacey Township High School.

Before tweaking the language in the high school's student handbook, the policy said "any student who is reported to be in possession of a weapon of any type for any reason or purpose whether on or off school grounds," would be subject to penalties including up to a one-year suspension.

It now omits any mention of possessing a weapon off school grounds and doesn't mention a specific suspension length. It also includes a note on buses.

"Students are forbidden to carry any type of weapon or simulated weapon to school," the revamped policy states. "Strict disciplinary action and legal actions will result if this occurs. Any person who knowingly has in his possession any imitation firearm in or upon any part of the building... without the written authorization of the governing officer of the institution, or while on any school bus is a disorderly person."

The revised policy can be accessed from the district's website but the old policy is still publicly available on a Google drive.

The executive director of the group that threatened to sue, the Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubs, said his organization considers the district's about-face a victory.

"It addresses many of the major issued we identified, but our counsel is still reviewing it," Scott Bach said.

Bach also blasted the district for not admitting its policy was wrong.

"Instead of the superintendent fessing up and admitting the policy was wrong, they try this misdirection," said Bach who described the district's antics as "petty" and "juvenile."

The photo that sparked the community backlash was taken on a weekend at a private gun range, according to Lacey Township resident Amanda Buron, a family friend of one of the students.

The photo showing four rifles, magazines and a gun duffel bag was shared by one of the students on the social media app Snapchat with the caption "fun day at the range," Buron said.

Lacey schools Superintendent Craig Wigley said in an email to NJ Advance Media on Thursday that "information posted on social media is incorrect" and that private matters involving students cannot be discussed. He declined to say what aspect of the accounts posted on social media is inaccurate.

What the kids do outside of school on their own time is none of the schools business. Who the hell do these school administrators think they are? They have no authority over the kids when they aren't in school. I think some of their socialist, Marxist brainwashing which they push on these poor kids has gone to their own heads.

Those kids should NOT accept that five day suspension either and instead tell the school administrator to get fucked.

I'm telling you, there is likely a large group of gluten free moms in their faces, telling them they're going to pull their kids out of that school because of that picture. The school is probably just trying to make an example of out of them. Gluten free moms are crazy.

I know the type. Recently there was a post on social media about the best local donut place around (country donuts) and there was a lady going off about how they don’t have enough gluten free options..... ummmm lady, it’s a donut shop. What are they supposed to make the fucking donuts out of?

Many public schools have become liberal propaganda machines. This isn't surprising at all.

I got detention for fighting off school property. And that was 20 years ago.

But this is stupid. For me, I'd never let my kids post it in the first place. But thats just me

when i was in school, if you were on the way to, or home from school, and caught doing something, it was an off school grounds incident, but punishment could be given at school. or if it happened close to school gronds.

this was because all the kids that wanted to fight, would go to the park just outside school lines and fight after school. BADAZZTEALCOBRA the park by your house.

back on topic, this school was way out of line. i am glad they changed the policy.

Back in my day there was a gap in the fence between the school and the one street that dead ends by the parking lot for autos class, that's where the fights would be or where people went to smoke. :bowrofl:

Man...everyone has gone soft now a days.

My dad used to tell me this story from when he was in High School. He used to belong to a "club" that had a range in their basement of the HS. Used to teach them how to correctly use the "equipment" and correctly sight in said "equipment". (words edited due to work computer).

While this is really stupid, I don't understand the "Gluten free moms" and "Gluten" jokes.

That never gets old does it?

Seriously though, week suspension would be termination of people involved and/or out of court settlement. I'd find a civil rights lawyer and let them do the rest for a portion of the bank. This is a first amendment issue as well as a second amendment issue since they weren't threatening anyone and they were peacibly assembling.

if you dont punish for it, its not on the books, therefore it does not exist, and you look like a good school. :io:

And you get rewarded in the form of $ from the government.

And you look good politically as a political figure.

What idiot reported them for posting a pic of the guns they shot at the range? AND A DUFFEL BAG?!?!?!? How can you not differentiate between that and a shitbag kid who threatens to shoot up schools and posts pics as a professional school shooter in durka durka garb, and continuously gets in trouble, many times violence-related? I mean, really, why do we have to even go there?
