You'll rarely find me making these types of posts, mostly because I'm an asshole but I wanted to share my morning with you.
So I've been going to the same barber for....I dont even know, 10 years? Hes an older guy. Gotta be in his 70s now. Anyway, I let me hair grow out a ton (for me) late summer and finally got sick of it...went to the barber, he wasnt there. Not unusual, he sometimes takes fishing trips. A month went by, two months. Finally had to go to another guy.
A week or so ago I saw a FB post saying the barber shop was open again. So needing a haircut, I went over this morning. As soon as I walked in, Jerry (the barber) immediately stopped what he was doing to shake my hand, big smile. He was wearing a hat and it looked like he had aged ten years.
My turn for the chair...I sit down, he puts his hand on my shoulder and says its so good to see me. I immediately ask where hes been....and he tells me he was walking across the street and a lady ran him down in her car. He went up and OVER the car. Was in the hospital for 10 weeks, had to do a brain surgery to relieve bleeding and pressure (50/50 chance of survival) but hes back in action. I explained that I was also hit by a car back in 09 and that I had a broke arm, etc...he somehow walked away with zero broken bones.....not to downplay the brain trauma. But he said hes back to 90%.
He explained that the barber shop is his social club and where he gets to talk to all his friends there and being in the hospital, he lost all that and he missed it. Said he missed seeing me and again said was so good to see me.
I made sure to shake his hand and tell him it was damn good to see him back in action. Big smile...you could just tell he was so happy to be back.
I guess the point of this post is, recognize the people around you that make a difference, any difference, and make sure they know they are appreciated and respected. I thought Jerry had passed away and that would have really sucked...I'm glad hes able to keep on fighting the good fight.
