I'm sure that kind of thing happens ALL the time.

Here is another incident with a cop illegally searching or possibly planting evidence in a guy's van, but he gets caught by the owner.

my police friends are thinking it's like when they find something and need to take a pic, that oops they picked it up then drop it back down and take a pic. which ok, i can see as a possible scenario, but it doesn't look good when you appear to be toggling your camera and fake walking in from the street to discover things.

also the cams work much different than i thought, in that the cop needs to turn them on. i figured they'd be default always on. i get not wanting to record your dick and your solitaire so there should be ways to toggle them. i think what would work best is operating them like a dash cam in a car, where they always record, but the switch you have would just flag start/stop of an event that you want to keep for later. that way at the end of the shift all the flagged stuff gets pulled. and if you missed something because some shit went down fast, then you'd still have video.

my buddy noted that because of laws, the above in many places is not even possible, as the law states anything recorded must be retained. which seems a poor policy to me. also one with technical challenges if you do this. this is a reason why some departments have not adopted them, or had them but got rid of them.

Retention requirements are more than good enough for corporations, why not the government and its agents?

I don't agree with opaqueness in the process of government unless it is to protect citizens in principle.

I'm really dubious on giving these guys the benefit of the doubt. They didn't just put it down and take a pic, they hid it and walked off. Why would you leave evidence unguarded so that it can disappear?

the question isn't whether they should have retention requirements, it's what that policy should be. retain any and all video period would be very expensive and the benefits are likely not worth it/don't exist.

the guys look terrible. even if everything is on the up and up, there's at least a training issue and the video looks absolutely awful.

They do have a policy on retention, I don't recall if it's 90 days or 6 months. It is dictated by CJIS if I recall. The reason for the policy as stated before is Freedom of Information Act or FOIA. Now once a FOIA request comes in a new policy for retention and handling of the information kicks in.

The cost of storage will continue to go down. How much data is "forever" retention now in the corporate world, or decades?

It indeed looks terrible even if it's on the up and up. I can tell you if a cop ever did this to me, the first thing I'd be looking to do after getting out of the joint would probably be killing them or otherwise extracting a confession out of them through less than gentle means.

Working with security video, I have never seen anyone have forever retention. Most I've seen is 3 years on video.

If they want something forever, they export it to disc or usb and then that is stored somewhere, like case evidence
