I know we talked about this before, but heres my overview of our Royal Caribbean cruise.6 nights, hit Cozumel and Costa Maya; my wife, 7 year old and step daughter. The good things: food was very good, service was fucking outstanding, ship was spotless, crew would do anything to make you happy.

The super positive: drink package, sorry royal Caribbean you lost, lost fucking wholesale on this one. This was about 45 a day, I crushed them in the first day for what I paid for the whole week. I was able to get a drink for me and a few for the wife and step daughter. The beers were all in pint aluminum bottles, my favorite, scotch was JW Black, JW Double Black, Macallan 12, glenlivet 12, it was top shelf shit. Find a bartender at a bar you will always visit, drop him 50 and you will never wait in line or ask for a double (day 1 mistake)

The activities were above and beyond, they had shit to do from the time you woke up and way beyond the time you would hit the sled. They had shit covered from my kid to my wife and I. Comedy club, kids club, movies at the pool at night, casino, the list is really endless.

The bad: when at port, they will nickle and dime you for a tip and actually demand one. This is what happens when you get off the ship, it has nothing to do with the cruise line. You have to pass through all these shops to get to cabs to take you to the beach. You need to have probably 200 in cash for misc b.s for the trip. You check in late afternoon the first day and are booted off the boat early the last day, huge buzz kill. If you go cheap like we did, the rooms are a coffin. Granted, I went with my wife and two girls which was the equivalent of 9 bags for them and a book bag for me. That was probably the biggest issue for us; getting ready. Thankfully for me, I could scrub my balls and get dressed by the numbers in under 10 minutes and chill at one of 20 bars right outside my room.

THE KILLER: spring break; I had no idea these retards would be on a cruise that cost this much money. The college kids covered the main bar like bees and honey. They ruined the pools and pretty much everything else. This was a family cruise, didn't expect this wild card. Yes, the eye candy was out of control, and the eye candy was hunting like no tomorrow (thats another thread) but I didnt really need chicks hitting on me with my 7 year old right there.

Overall, very good cruise for the price, will definitely do again over an all inclusive resort.

Great review!

Did you ask for a room upgrade when you signed up for the cruise? That has worked well for me in the past. Bigger window instead of a porthole, outside room instead of inside, etc. I'd give them a true or BS reason, honeymoon, birthday, anniversary, whatever.

"I really like your ship and would like to sign up but... the room isn't exactly what I was looking for. I'm looking for the best deal. Cruiseline XYZ said they will upgrade me, can you do that? It's my wife's 30th birthday and I'd really like to surprise her with a better room..."

I like cruises a lot. I've done everything from an inside room up to a suite with a balcony. After experiencing both I'll generally get the inside poverty room, at least at this age. Usually the only time I'm in the room is to sleep at night, or take my before dinner sober up nap, so why pay hundreds extra for a balcony?

I really just like being on the boat. I think I've been on 4 or 5 cruises now and there are some ports that in the future I don't think I'd even bother getting off of it. I don't need to get off the boat to be heckled by locals trying to sell shit and pay out the ass at some senor frogs or margaritaville when I've already paid to eat and drink on the boat. Ports in Mexico and the Bahamas come to mind. Now that I re read your post I hated costa maya AND Cozumel . Costa Maya was that weird little shopping center with the huge fountain where everything just seemed really touristy, and Cozumel I had some guy trying to sell me coke outside of Senor Frogs.

I really like the U.S. Virgin island ports I've been too, and think in the future I'd like to do the southern Carribean.

I've only cruised with Norwegian and it was an awesome experience. The wife and I keep talking about another one. We kept calling the cruise line up to the week we left because as they drop the rates they gave us the price match as on board credit which was pretty cool. Ports I could take or leave. Bucket list would be Alaskan Cruise

Cruises are a blast, cant say I've ever had a bad experience on one yet. A seaside room is worth the extra cost too. I'll be going on my 4th cruise in May with the fam, wife and I got comp'ed a drink package this time and I'm stoked.

The ports and the shopping centers are canned but avoidable tourist traps. Never pay full price, always haggle if you must. You have to get away from the port to absorb the authenticity of these islands.

We did Norwegian back on our honeymoon. We did the L.A. to Mexico ports (Acapulco, Zihuatanejo, Puerto Vallarta, Mazalton, Cabo, and probably one other I am forgetting).

We had the seaside room with a balcony...BONUS! We paid for the drink package (I'm not a big alchohol drinker, but Diet Coke, I might as well get it pumped right into my arm), so I know they lost on that... What was nice about this, was that NCL was one of the first "free form" style cruises. Where we weren't required to be formal, or do certain activities at certain times because that was the only time they were available. If I wanted a steak at 1am and I was in my underwear, fine! Not that I would, but... I must've gained 40 pounds as I was always up at the grill section by the pool getting burgers or other pub style food. There were minimal kids, the pool wasn't packed, women doing the clubbing and the bars with virtually nothing on, women up by the pool with virtually nothing on, me with a massive hard-on, yea...

One thing, at each of those ports, we had activities outside the dock. Some where nice, but I have to say, that I've had bullets whizzing by my head on the west and south sides of Chicago and I've felt SAFER there than I did in Acapulco. I was waiting for us to get butt-raped at any given point in time. I knew we were being watched anywhere we went outside the terminal. And of course all the peddlers right there to innundate you... Anyway, I couldn't wait to get back to the boat in Acapulco.

However Puerto Vallarta was awesome, went to a Tequilla factory and toured the plant watching the entire process of how it was made, then got to sample it all (multiple flavors) afterwords. Ended up bringing home a couple bottles, including an orange flavored tekillya.

Also love Cabo. Tried to get into Cabo Wabo, but the wait time was too long for our time ashore. I think we ended up finding some actual, down home, taco place that had some of the best steak tacos I've ever had. Oh and lets not for get the REAL Diet Coke down there... Coke Light. :D

Just booked a cruise on royal Caribbean to the Bahamas 093LZ any other tips or things to look for?

First time ever on a cruise

Nice dude, its a blast. I would try what one of the others have said in the thread and see if they will upgrade your room. OH, forgot this one, they charge 13.50 per person, per day for "gratuities", only way I caught it was that I randomly checked my bank account and saw the transactions. Call them asap and tell them you will tip in cash, which is basically for the dude that cleans your room. It was a nice sneaky fine print move that they pull.(we gave our guy 100, he was awesome)

After day one, I would see what bars you think you will frequent the most, find a bar tender and tip em 20 bones and he will be your new best friend all week. And contrary to what Royal Caribbean says, you cannot board til about 1pm. The biggest tip I can give you, is fly in the day before, dont risk your flight being delayed and you miss the boat. We flew in a day early, got a cheap hotel and boarded the next day, dont risk it. Make sure you have like a book bag with a change of clothes etc, you wont get your bags til about 5pm on the first day. Also download the app "mobile passport", they suggest this and im glad I did. People were lined up 4 rows deep to get through customs when you come back, and easy 45 minute wait. I downloaded the app, gave the required passport info and walked right up to a designated lane for people who have the app, and walked right out.

Are you on the cruise out of Miami and hitting up CocoCay?

I went on that Royal Caribbean cruise about 11-12 years ago. We got to CocoCay which is just a small sandbar island with some tiki huts. We got on the tenders to hit the island for scuba diving and while we are over halfway to the island a funnel cloud comes down a few miles away. Waves were coming up over the top deck of the tender which was about 30feet.

1800 people dressed in swimming clothes or shorts were stuck on the CocoCay island overnight with 70mph winds and the only shelter being those tiki huts. No food or water and we froze our asses off. Let's just say the gilligans island song was sung to death that night.

RC comped everyone the cruise and had open bar the rest of the trip. It sucks because there were 2 more stops that we missed. Even though that one night was absolutely horrible the cruise itself was good.

Leaving out of Orlando and yes hitting Nassau and CocoCay.

That sounds like a terrible ordeal lol

Thank you!

NP!

Flying in a day early gave us the ability to save almost 670 on airfare because we had the flexibility of flying whenever we wanted. Sure we spent 200 on a room, but that still put us up almost 500. Same coming back, took the red eye into midway, found a sweet hotel with a 4 hour stay that had a nice ass pool and a bar. We chilled all day, didnt rush off the boat and b line for the airport; went to the room had lunch, let the kid swim and went to the airport when we felt like it. I traveled with 2 women and my daughter, having ample time for "shit happens" which it always does, was key in my book. Kept me from going into overload and pissing the wife off.
