They've probably already been able to do this for a very long time with cameras . And it could also be just an optical illusion. The blade starts turning backwards at the end . Meaning the shutter of either the camera or your eye is off a tiny bit making it looks like it's turning backwards.

I'm betting the frame rate on the camera is perfectly constant. The slight variation in RPM on the rotor from pitching the blades for takeoff and maneuvering is why we'd see the rotor to go from forward to stopped to backwards
