So I am changing my air filter for a similar sized air purifier.

so the return sends air through the air filter, then the furnace but it looks like there is a route for the air to flow to the other side of the furnance as well.

The new air purifier doesn't allow for that return to be used as the back is closed off. Am I OK with sealing it off? The only thing I can think of it doing is equalizing the air pressure?

This example doesn't show a need for that additional route for air.

i don't know what i'm looking at here?

assuming the rectangle open right now is where your filter is, the right side of that is the return duct and the left side is going into the blower compartment?

could be ducted to your humidifier assuming you have one, fresh(outside) air intake if your house is new enough
