I had the same call once...he said my Windows license key was expiring. I had the guy going for a few minutes acting like I thought he was talking about the windows in my house.

"I wasn't even aware that my windows had keys, they just have a latch on each one...."

Yep its a scam and sadly people fall for it. They mainly want your credit card info. Some of these guys ask to remote into your computer, trick the user into thinking they are doing something when they are likely installing malware. After a few minutes they ask for your credit card info to "fix the problem".

Microsoft does not call home users. They do however do routine license audits for businesses, but at a professional level.
