The Catholic Church is the richest organization on the planet.... They make companies like Apple, Google, Walmart look like a little fart. Think of all that money you could bring in from them.

I worry about both, they both need major reform.

Everyone should be paying a fair share, and that money as a whole should be spent more efficiently.

Reminds me of Bill Whittle and his video where if we took 100% of every CEO's pay in the US including every asset they own, every share of every company they own, EVERYTHING, we'd pay for about week of the national budget.

You can't tax people into slavery to pay for reckless spending. IL is in the dilemma we're in BECAUSE IL just thought they could continue to raise taxes yet spent those raised taxes the very second the new budget passed through, disregarding the previous unpaid bills those taxes were supposed to pay for in the first place.

At a very basic level of rebuttal, the church provides a service and services aren't taxable last I knew.

Amen...Fix expenditures before asking for more taxes. Once you've fixed the expense side, then come to the taxpayers with a plan, why taxes need to be raised and where they will be spent. I have no issues paying more taxes if needed within an honest and efficient Gov't.

Is there a loophole in the property tax freeze for raising the taxes when the home is sold to new owners?

That's a Florida property tax issue

In IL, it's not a freeze on an individual property's tax liability. It freezes how much each jurisdiction or unit of government can take in each year. [i]How much you pay of that total is determined by your property's value compared to the total value of all properties located within that taxing jurisdiction.[i] These jurisdictions set their budgets each year and recieved what they wanted, no matter what the property values did. overall values went down, the rates just went up. Values go way up (well over 5%) then rates would start to go down somewhat.

Each year these jurisdictions were able to increase their total take in by up to 5% without anything stopping them (IIRC). These tax increases by say a school district would continue to happen even when values plummeted.

This freeze says the jurisdictions (schools, counties, etc.) cannot increase their total tax take in each year unless approved by voter referendum. This should hopefully stop or curb the endemic of high property taxes over time...

Ah. Florida already limits annual increases in assessed value of property with Homestead Exemption to three percent or the change in the Consumer Price Index, whichever is lower.

I'm assuming Illinois will crank up the assessed value of a home when it is purchased for more money than the previous owner paid?

Most of the churches assets are property though and belongings. I don't think they are cash flush like big corporations.

Late on the post but Richmond is a beautiful area and has a very busy and diverse population. You are close to big towns and the sticks, as well as not far from great hiking, camping, and hunting. Wife and I have considersd moving to that area for our next home.

Non for profits and religious organizations should pay property taxes as they use Government services. I'd be 100% for this and I am surprised that some atheist hasn't tried to go after the Government for religious tax shelters.
