No idea what this means, does it lock your dollar amount? Does it lock the taxing body's on their Levi's, does it stop the 5% increases and the taxing bodies have been abusing?

It's good news, that's about all I know. I read a tiny bit on the proposal awhile back when they were first talking about implementing a freeze. It read well to me at the time, but I don't recall the details.

I don't see anything regarding this on the news? I even googled Illinois property tax.

So basically our home property taxes will not be going up? I need some explanation

Sure hope it's not a complete freeze, only a freeze from going up.

Thought there was something april 4th about this, but if this is approved I guess it can be good

It seeks to set a tax cap of zero percent on all taxing bodies in the state, including home-rule units – the only way local governments could receive any increase is by voter referendum.

Would a property tax hike freeze take away our right to try and lower our property tax?

it'd be interesting to see what a property tax freeze would do for the real estate market.

plenty of homes out there im interested in, but nervous about the taxes going from 8-9k to 14-15k in 3-4 years.

I'm (naively) hopeful that this freeze is an indicator that the state is getting their heads out of their asses and beginning to contemplate how to actually address the issues the state is having when it comes to property taxes.

Obviously wishful thinking, but maybe JUST MAYBE, they'll fix this before the entire state clears out and makes a balanced budget an impossibility?

Then again, they can't produce a balanced budget with the population they had in the past, how will they get it done with a reduced population going forward?

I'm glad you guys have at least some hope, although I wasn't there during the meetings, many reported the school district board was real smug about not giving a fuck what the tax payers think and they will levy and spend whatever the fuck they want. I think the schools are 75% of property taxes.

The teachers union has to stop. Its utterly ridiculous. Its time in IL, for us to draw the line in the sand, and say no more public union pensions for any new hire. Everyone from now on has to pay into a 401k like the private sector.

Before anyone screams bloody murder, my wife was a tenured public school teacher before staying home with kids.

Well it just means that there will be referendums on tax increases and we all know those neighborhood Moms that are going to push more money for the schools at any cost. "It's for the children!"... These schools have enough money, but they just don't spend it well.

It's my guess that places like Elgin and Aurora, that have a higher amount of apartments/voters who don't directly pay property taxes, will be successful in raising levies through the referendums.

The schools have WAYYY more than enough money. Look at the average cost per student in Chicagoland private schools vs. public schools. Its nuts!

75% of mine in Naperville. If you look at the costs of that 75% for my district, I believe 80% is for salaries for teachers and admins.

Then these fucking religious institutions not paying taxes, it was determined the budget would be balanced if they did.

Wish in one hand and shit in the other, see which fills up first. This state is screwed, it's inevitable and only a matter of time before it fails.

Everyone should be paying taxes. Anyone or any organization who is exempt from paying taxes is complete and utter bullshit.

Scientology is a perfect FUCKING EXAMPLE.

It was founded by American science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard (1911–86) in 1955. The other fictional books are just older.

Is there a statistic out there on how much a priest makes? Or even a neighborhood church?
