The northern Alberta town, which is Canada’s oilsands capital, was caught off guard by a quick-spreading conflagration on Tuesday. By Wednesday afternoon, more than 80,000 people had heeded a mandatory evacuation order, and tens of thousands were staying in emergency shelters in communities like Lac La Biche and Edmonton.

As of Thursday, the province says that the fire conditions are still extreme in Wood Buffalo.

A total of 49 wildfires are burning, with seven considered out of control. 12 fires are being held, 23 are under control and seven are being extinguished by local authorities.

More than 1,110 firefighters, 145 helicopters, 138 pieces of heavy equipment and 22 air tankers are fighting the fires.

Kinda wish I hadn't read this article because it mentioned that people had their pets with them but some didn't :wtc::wtc:

Silver lining, one person said they had 2 dogs with them that weren't theirs, but were going to get them back to their owners. Good for them.

In the animation below - a series of imagery from NASA's Terra, Aqua and Suomi NPP satellites - reveal how the fires have progressed from overnight Sunday through to overnight on Wednesday.
