I saw a post by the almighty KJ and thought it would be a cool idea for a thread. So post up, best project you've done for under a $1,000 I submit my fireplace refinish, all in for $500 will be closer to $800 when I get around to new doors but here it is, I used Lowe's Airstone and a mantle I bought off the Internet

$400 for bricks and construction adhesive and about $80 IIRC for the mantle. Took me a while to do. They take the heat too. I def recommend the product super light weight and glues to the wall with regular construction adhesive, I used instant grab since I was stacking them

That looks awesome, what kind of insert is it? I'd like to change ours so it actually adds heat to the room instead of robbing it

insert is original to the House, made in like '78 it's just a standard 42" (IIRC Maybe 38") wood burning. Personally I think it would benefit from a circulation fan but I would've had to lift the box maybe 6" to get it to fit and it didn't seem worth it. It heats the family room area very well but the thermostat is on the other side of the room so the rest of the house freezes.

What the hell are you watching that its so bright??? I thought you put a window in at first

sorry Rich :( but I don't remember what was on T.V. when I took this pic

looks awesome!

I think you have to install some fan to move the heat from fire places, otherwise they are only 10% efficient? heat rises straight up to the chimney for the most part. wood burning stoves FTW although not as aesthetically pleasing.

Thanks. I wanted to change it out for a stove on a built platform but the wife was dead set against it so this was the compromise.

I love menards. just not that deck over product they sell.

Every store has its plusses and minuses. My biggest gripe about HD is most associates don't have a clue and aren't very nice. People working at Menards are much more pleasant to deal with. Except SinisterSHO

had that in the house I grew up in and heated probably 90% of the house, might try to incorporate one in my basement build, just need to find a creative way to route the chimney that isn't a WTF look on the inside or outside of the house :obama:
