vice or vanguard had an episode i think on india. where you'd just throw a rock into the field and that's where you'd shit iirc... i think they did a few other places too. it was pretty much capitalism and keeping up with the joneses that was causing the spread of toilets in personal residences.

i liked vanguard but current dropped it, for whatever reason. it was one of the last embedded journalism shows. seems like only vice is really out there now.
