I mean it's still just melamine wrapped particle board so of course itll suck compared to a 3/4" pure hardwood cabinet, but it's still better than the cheap 1/2" melamine wrapped ones you see from the big box hardware stores.

I think he's talking about the bottom of the upper cabinets where you would put the undercabinet lighting....

I get what he's saying, but like we used the plain stock cabinets from home depot for my parents wet bar and their underside is literally a sticker that looks like wood.....

The only picture I found of the ikea one looks like it is finished but you could see the screws for tightening the boxes:

Meh. It's the underside of the cabinet. I can't think of a single kitchen Ive ever gone into in my life where I've gone to the countertop and turned my head upside down to see how the underside of their cabinets looked.

Work at an architecture firm. Coworkers agree that for residential...IKEA cabinets are the way to go. They have really good BASE cabinets and really good hardware (the pulls, swings, etc). The only thing is that it is limited in finish choices.
There is actually companies that specialize in nicer and high end cabinet fronts that will fit with the IKEA cabinets.
http://www.semihandmadedoors.com is an example company.

My contractor friend says the dirty secret of his business is that IKEA kitchens really are the best deal for most people.

I'm a General Contractor who specializes in kitchen remodels, so here is my take on Ikea cabinets. They can look great, or they can look like you got them at Ikea. What I mean by that is don't just get the cabinets and faces and call it good. Get the light rail and crown too. Get the end panels. Really take a look at how Ikea built them in the showroom and what they used. We've installed a few of them now, and for what they are, I really like them. They are more affordable and better optioned than many of the semi-custom cabinets I've installed, and carry a warranty. Definitely look elsewhere for counter tops. As for appliances, Ikea appliances are made and warrantied by Whirlpool.
