In their defense though, not really much you can do if he was using her as a human shield and firing at police officers... It was either going to be the both of them dying, or a bunch of cops.

I thought it was their duty to protect people. Yeah I'd say keep distance. Hell if there was a helicopter let it follow the guy and the cops in range back off so not in range to be shot. To fire 600 rounds into a car that had a hostage is reckless and stupid.
If he was in the bank still should they just toss a few grenades inside. Come on. Can't make decisions based off what ifs, just the current facts and there was an innocent person getting shot from piss poor decisions and aim.
