Most of these would be pre-electronic diesels. If I remember correctly Detroits have a bushing in the pump that breaks and locks it open. If you've been doing it ~20 years chances are you skipped seeing a lot of them. Love it how the old timer came in and saved the day though. That was great.

It's been known to happen to pipeline vehicles when there is a propane or butane leak, we have kill switches on all the diesel trucks if they hit a certain rpm in park it will turn off

That's crazy. I knew about the condition in which it feeds off its own oil, but never considered the possibility of the fuel coming in along with the air itself. You literally have to choke the engine to death to get it to stop.

I have a buddy who works for estes as a technician and he had a runaway diesel happen to him when he started the truck up to bring it in the shop.

Motor popped before he could even get it into neutral and turn it off.

Well yea, he (and I) know that, but you still turn the key off to cut fuel.
