Dang. Kvyat found out what happens when you put just one wheel slightly over on suzuka in quali this morning. Glad he popped out of the car quickly.

This just in! F1 cars to be (up to) 25% louder this season!

Its something I guess. We'll see what kind of difference it will actually make.

Quote:
The noise of a Formula 1 engine could be as much as 25 per cent higher in 2016 because of exhaust regulation changes, says Williams technical chief Pat Symonds.

The sounds of the cars has been heavily scrutinised since the new turbo hybrid power unit formula was introduced at the start of 2014.

Last year, the World Motor Sport Council approved changes that demand all 2016 cars to have a separate exhaust wastegate tailpipe through which all and only wastegate exhaust gases must pass.

Speaking at the Autosport International Show, Symonds said: "In the past, everyone has run wastegate pipes into the main tailpipe of the engine and what we have to do in 2016 is separate them.

"The wastegate on a modern turbo engine doesn't open very much.

"We have a motor generator attached to the turbocharger which is one of the ways we harvest waste energy and that controls the compressor speed rather than using a rather inefficient wastegate.

"So we really try not to open it very much. In race trim, it's hardly ever open and in qualifying, we open it a bit.

"You might think, if you're not opening the wastegate, you won't hear much difference but that is not quite true.

"Because there is a pipe joining the wastegate and main tailpipe, it acts as a side branch resonator. Fancy name, what does it mean?

"It means actually even with the wastegate closed, it acts like a silencer in the exhaust.

"Getting rid of that means it'll be a bit louder.

"In terms of what you will perceive, with the wastegate closed, you'll perceive it is around 14 per cent louder.

"With the wastegate open, it'll actually be 20-25 per cent louder, so quite significant.

"We haven't heard these on the circuit yet, but I think we may hear a few of the old signature noises from the turbos, the whistles and the pops - but we will have to wait and see about that one."

Since the new engines were introduced, the sound has gradually got louder through natural development and Symonds believes that will continue.

"This is a natural progression," he said. "A lot of the sound is a function of the cylinder pressure.

"The higher the cylinder pressure the more sounds coming out and as engines develop, the way you get power is to get the cylinder pressures up.

"We've seen some big increases since the beginning of 2014 - the cars have got naturally louder and they will get naturally louder this year in addition to the changes we have made to exhaust."

Wonder how Hass F1 season will go, they have a good motor with Ferrari and have plenty of time to get ready. Gene even said they had a little more time to prepare then other teams. Either way good to see American influence back in F1.

im hopeful they'll have a decent chance thanks to the collaboration w/ ferrari, but we'll just have to wait and see I guess. It's huge that they have a factory in the states and overseas.

Hmmm... Will need to hear out on a track.... but, enticed so far.

The 2 pipes underneath the main pipe are hooked directly up to the wastegate now and thats where most of the noise is supposed to come from this year

Looks pretty boiler plate. Just hope the car performs well. haha. I will say the mclaren just gets uglier and uglier every year. Which makes me sad. I do kinda like the Ferraris w/ the extra white this year. Makes me feel like i should see a big MARLBORO decal slapped across it

So I guess qualifying is changing...again. Not sure how I feel about this new format. Its like one big Elimination match from Burnout or something

Quote:
Formula 1 bosses have voted unanimously to deliver a dramatic overhaul of the qualifying format for the upcoming season.

Following a meeting of the Strategy Group and F1 Commission in Geneva, the format change has been voted through to spice up the show.

Qualifying will remain as a one-hour session, split into three segments, but drivers must be on track throughout each part until they get knocked out.

Details on how the new qualifying format will work exactly have yet to be decided, but the general outline has been agreed.

Q1 will now last 16 minutes and after seven minutes the slowest driver will take no further part in the session.

Every 90 seconds thereafter, the slowest will be knocked out until there are only 15 drivers remaining.

After a short break, Q2 will commence and last 15 minutes with the slowest driver eliminated after six minutes.

As was the case in Q1, the slowest driver at the time will be knocked out at 90-second intervals until eight remain.

Q3 will last 14 minutes and see the process repeated again with the slowest taking no further part after five minutes.

The next five drivers will drop out at 90-second intervals leaving the final two drivers to fight it out for pole in the final 90 seconds.

The change will require ratification by the World Motor Sport Council, which next meets on March 4.

sounds like Haas is dong fairly decent in testing one front wing issue that they addressed. Vettel is quick and Mercedes is racking up miles. Think they are giving the field a sense of false hope that they can be beat, sure they have a lot more in the tank then what they are showing.

Melbourne is just around the corner should be interesting how these next couple of days of testing go.

Oh thank god, the new qualifying format has been delayed, for a little while at least. The softwares not gonna be ready for the start of the season.

Im just glad that Eccelstones qualifying "plan" god rejected

Quote:
Ecclestone has revealed the latest tweak to qualifying is "not what I wanted in the end", and instead he sought to introduce a time-penalty system for poles and race wins.

"All I'm trying to do is muddle up the grid so that the guy that is quickest in qualifying doesn't sit on pole and disappear, because why he should be slow in the race if he is quick in qualifying?" added Ecclestone.

"I wanted a very simple thing. I wanted qualifying to stay as it is, because it is good, and then if a guy is on pole and has won the last race, he gets so many seconds added to his time so he has to fight through the bloody pack to get in the lead, which he would do in the end.

"It would be exciting racing while he is doing it."

But Ecclestone claims it was vetoed by the teams as "they don't want to do reverse grids".

He said: "There are a million things they could do, but they are completely mad.
Formula 1's new qualifying format to be delayed, Ecclestone says - F1 news - AUTOSPORT.com

Yeah...the TEAMS are mad.... God he needs to just go already.
