Eric is a good guy. But I am paying him for the work he is doing. It is his lift, his tools, his shop materials, his knowledge, and it's his business. So I wouldn't ask him for something for free. I could do this on my own but I wouldn't want to do this on my garage floor with jack stands. lmao But we work out special arrangements with one another. So it isn't charity work but it isn't costing me nearly what it should either.

I let him lead and do whatever he says to do. Sometimes it's just me working on the car. Other times we are both thrashing on it. I also save him time by cleaning and organizing all the tools, cleaning the bench and floors (what a mess with oil and coolant haha), clean the parts that need to be installed again, pre-assemble stuff to go back on, and so on. All of which saves him time working on the project. So when he is at work I am still there working on stuff. Ya, he does this but is also a Lombard cop. lol

We work well enough together, have some fun, and I learn a lot stuff I probably wouldn't learn about. It isn't every day you get to help and learn about Vipers, Ferrari, Lambos, and just about every other car manufacturer. lol Then other times I drop stuff off and I'm like "Fix this and bill me"
haha

I ordered most of this stuff 5 days after purchasing the car. We only started working on it now as Eric had a bunch of work come in that took precedence. Because as I said, this was a special arrangement.

But ya, still pretty cool going hard with all this. haha

A Viper and a 911 Turbo are two VERY different cars on total opposite spectrum of the refinement scale.

I have honestly never wanted a viper. I have been around them for decades and even drove them on occasion. They are brutish and quick. No doubt about that. But after being in them and driving them, they are not for me. The exterior styling is ok if you are talking the Gen 3 and later cars. But the interior is so bland. I believe all of the controls in those cars came from the Neon.

Dodge%20Viper%20Cockpit.jpg

I plan to put a lot of miles on this car. I didn't buy a mint, super low mileage car because of that. Rock chips are gonna happen. And I know I can put a lot of miles in a 911. I couldn't day the same about the viper. And as much as I hate to say it, I would buy a new z06 vette over any viper. I know, that is a horrible thought. But the Vette is a more liveable car as well.

I have always loved and wanted a 911. I would kill for a 964 turbo or 993 turbo as they have more of the classic 930 styling with more current looks, electronics, and amenities. But seeing and they start at $150k or more, they were not an option. The 996 or 997 were priced right. I picked the 997 for the interior, PASM as well as the updated motor and turbos.

Exactly. If you want a raw and visceral experience, the viper is the car for you. I read someone said the viper is going to be our generation's Shelby 427 cobra. I agree with that. It has a lot of power, light weight, big tires, and has a feel of a true race car. In all aspects it feels like a race car. Including in negative ways.

The 911 Turbo is a car you can drive every day, all day. It is just usable in all aspects of life. Minus large shopping trips. Haha But it is a kiity cat is city traffic of it can be a monster on the road circuit. It does it all without complaint.

Since we are waiting on parts from Porsche I got other assemblies done so they are all ready to go back on the motor or on the car.

First up was the turbos. I had to swap over the variable turbine actuators, or what ever they are called. They can off of but the screws only threaded in like 3 turns. One of the threaded bosses stripped out. A longer bolt on all of the mounting spots had better engagement and meant I didn't have to use a thread insert in it. The rod on one of the turbos was kind of froze and did not want to come off. That took a while but it came off. All in all no major issues but took longer than it should. And you can see a difference in the compressor wheel size.

All done. Actuators and recirculation valves, and aftermarket inlet adapters installed.

The new oil cooler pipes installed easily and will be more reliable than the stock plastic versions

Then I worked on the intercoolers. The new ones are much bigger so they use a new carbo fiber upper duct from AMS. You modify the lower exit duct. This means neither lock into position like they do with the stock intercooler. So they may need to be readjusted and positioned once in the car. I painted the brackets as they had some peeling of the OE paint. This project took a long time. lol Just trying to wrestle everything in place since there isn't a flat side to anything and holding thing together with two hands made this a chore. But all done and ready to go now. You can see how much larger these intercoolers are too. These keep temps in check really well.

The new headers and turbos got installed on the motor. As well as new spark plugs and coils installed. All the coils were cracked. I forgot to get a pic of the one. It had long cracks in about 4 places. No wonder the car misfire with the Cobb canned tune.

Tonight we will get the clutch on and the transaxle back into the motor. Then install the new fuel filter, motor mounts, trans mount inserts, and whatever else we have parts for. Unfortunately, we are going to be held up by Porsche. The dealer is moving to a new building. Meaning parts are not being ordered for a few more days. Sucks, but it is out of our hands.

It wasn't cheap! The worst part is spending all that cash and having to still modify parts to fit correctly. The AMS kit is the best out there but the MAP sensor doesn't fit correctly in their y-pipe. I stopped at AMS and even talked to their engineer. They are not sure what the issue is but admit it is their part. So to get it to work I had to file out the MAP sensor mounting hole so it would work. Then I discovered the mounting bolt only threads in 2.5 turns of a fine thread bolt. Really? lol

I will be using a Cobb Accessport. Basically a flash tuner. We will do some data logs on the street. Then some track tuning at Byron. I may rent a dyno to see where the numbers are at and tweak it further if needed. The factory ECU is pretty capable like more new cars are now. So plenty of data to make sure the car is doing what it should and be safe.

Ya, no major surprises or setbacks. But the dealer not ordering parts could be an issue now. Waiting to hear back from the parts guy to see if he parts list we sent last week has even been ordered yet.

The welding of the coolant pipes isn't done yet either. But those should be done in the next couple of days.
