🔧 BUILD PSJ's 2010 Camaro SS Build

General Information

I've had my 2010 Camaro SS for 4 years now, bought it used from Jennings with 6800 on the mill. It's a 1SS / RS. Cloth seats, no sunroof. Went 13.15@@106 stock, cut a 1.95 on the stock tires.

Two months later while driving home from a meeting in Detroit, a tread from a truck attacked us:

Bumper was dragging, so I stopped at a gas station and borrowed a sawzall much to the amazement of the station owner:

Lame:

Cured:

Time for mods. Airbox #1:

Bo White ported TB, first version:

I did some writing for Camaro Now and GMHTP, first article was titled "Mods for the Masses" and covered the performance gain from installing Kooks longtube headers, carts, CAI cold air, Powerbond underdrive pulley, Bo's ported throttle body, and some tuning:

With headers, cats, airbox, ported throttle body, underdrive pulley and tuning... On stock tires car went 12.72@110 on a 1.92. Was very difficult to hook on stock Pirellis.

Added a set of 4 20x9 replica wheels, and a pair of Nitto 555 drag radials in back. 12.37@112 1.85 after about 15 passes:

I love the 5th gen, another appearance mod, the heritage grill:

So runs 12.3s, looks great. I'm done. Or not.

Swapped in Circle D 3200 for a second article. Added in a pair of used 305/45R18 Nitto NT05R drag radials.

Low 12's with Just Bolt-Ons - Mods for the Masses, Part 2

Added a matching set of fronts, appearance mod:

In this configuration the car went 12.06@112, cutting a 1.70 60. Tire was not 100%, I was having to roll out a bit, would have went 11.9x on a better tire.

Purty:

Oh hai, appearance mod:

Let's try a 3rd air box:

Let's swap on a RCR rod mod intake:

Let's go catless and cut out the stock resonator and swap in one from Jegs:

Let's swap in a 3.91 gear and a pair of 17x7 Race Stars. Nice weight reduction:

And then let's go 11.84@113 (best mph 115) stock internal. Traction issues keep me from dipping into the 11.7's. I unfortunately at this point am still addicted to Nittos, a bad decision that will haunt me in 2015.

Nitto's for life:

And then I went to the track one more time in 2014, trying for 11.7s. Instead I break the factory oil cooler and oil down the right lane.

Let's have the stock oil cooler break at Byron and oil down a lane

December, 2014. Let's go by our buddy Anthony Manna's shop and do heads and cam, and a new set of headers (Hooker Blackheart 1 7/8 full exhaust).

Sourced the bumpstick from GPI, their VVT SS3. Bo White stepped up again and ported a set of stock castings for me. I went with the hollow LS3 valves.

Loud as f***:

Tim Williams tuned her, and hit 463rwhp on the load dyno.

Spent all of 2015 with the new combo. Debut pass was 11.6@116, nothing to brag about. Kept at it. Got to 11.4@118, still nothing special for the power gain.

Swapped in airbox #4. #3 was heatsoaking the IAT sensor, which Tim had pointed out when dynoing. 11.3 next time out, and then 11.2, and finally went 120 MPH. Then 121. Then 122.

Got down to 11.06@123 with the Nittos (my third pair). Can't hook better than a 1.51 and I'm still having to take some bite out of the launch.

Video of 11.06 pass: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_dahHfu4sE&index=5&list=PLsoQJhHs2lIOmIwA1HsA_t61tEKhivsbS

11.02. Getting quicker. They prep the track great. I break the diff:

Spider gears in pieces. Swap in Eaton TrueTrac (thanks Anthony!).

Swapped on a set of M&H 275/50R17 drag radials. Not impressed, hook about the same as the Nittos:

But wait, I have another set of rims and tires. Swapped on a set of 28x17 Hoosier slicks:

Man, good for you. Great to see the evolution of this car. You said previously you were going for some type of record...I thought?

Right now I'm one of a handful of stock bottom end, non-power adder 5th gens that has been 10's on motor. I am only #8. I'd like to work my way down to 10.59 this year, which most likely put me at #4 or #5 by the end of this year. Some of the other guys have been stepping up and a friend just went from 10.86 to 10.66 two weeks ago.

Awesome to see the car's progression. Can't wait to see if you can reach your goal. My guess by fall you will get that number, or better.

What are those guys doing differently?

Going from point A to point B quicker? :gfight:

I would love to see the true weights on the cars that are going 10's. I bet some of them are pretty light.

Not lately, GMHTP was shut down and Camaro Now tightened up the editorial staff. My two articles on this car have been rebranded as Super Chevy articles. I have recently talked to the editor about doing a part 3, still a conversation at this point.

That's great. Good luck man :bigthumb: I'm going on my tenth year writing for Cars.com and was hugely bummed to see GMHTP shuttered in 2014. It was one of the last print mags I subscribed to besides Hot Rod. Your multi-part build thread with dyno numbers and track times is great to follow. Keep up the good work :bigthumb:

Thanks guys.

So 2016 here is how I plan to go from [email protected] to 10.65@127:

E85 flex fuel setup
17x7s -> 17x4.5 / Lighter and narrower tires too
-106 lbs weight reduction in total
Loosen converter from 4C to 5C (or sell my current converter)
15" conversion in back

Might be some other little stuff I'm forgetting.

I just got these, these lower control arms will allow me to run 15's. Now I have to mill my V6 brakes or just buy different calipers:

The 3200 was unnoticeable after a week of driving.

I didn't mention it earlier, but I have since swapped it out for a 3600-3800 (Circle D 4C). I dont' notice this one either. I plan to pull it and loosen to 5C (4200 I hope). My buddy just did the same swap in a similar combo (#5 on the list at 10.83) and he said he noticed it at first but not a big deal.
