Default American Marksman dudes, step in

Anyone want to approximate their times given the rules for the qualifier?

All shooting for the local qualifying level will be standing, unsupported and freestyle. Freestyle means we do not restrict how you choose to hold your firearm as long as all safety protocol is followed. A two handed grip is permitted.

Total rounds fired per target sheet shall be 25. Total rounds fired during the 2-sheet course of fire will be 50. See the image of the target sheet below for reference.

"String 1": 2 rounds per target, freestyle (10 rounds total)
"String 2": 1 round per target, freestyle (5 rounds total)
"String 3": 2 rounds per target, freestyle (10 rounds total)

Score will be time + penalties. Each of the three (3) strings will be timed separately and recorded on the provided scorecard. After the first 3 strings are complete, Range Master will retrieve target sheet and add up the penalties, which will be added to the score.

Penalties will be scored as follows:
Completely within the center area will be a “0” (no penalty assessed).
Completely within the circular /rings area (stars & stripes) is a 2 second penalty.
Completely outside of the circular area, but still on the target sheet, will be a 4 second penalty. The letters that spell out “American Marksman” count as outside the ring areas.
Any round that completely misses the target sheet will be scored as a 6 second penalty.
Any procedural penalty will be scored as a +6.

Procedural penalties will be defined as:
A round that completely misses the target sheet.
Failure to follow commands or course guidelines.
Any other instance deemed by Range Officer as worthy of procedural penalty.
General rule on penalties: If a round leaves an impact point that crosses over two different scoting areas, the penalty assessed will be the lowest (or least harmful to a competitor’s score) available. The range master administering the contest shall have the final say on all penalties.
I'm sort of pumped for this now... who all signed up?

if I get a trigger in my little ruger I'd guess 15-18 seconds for the three strings, and I'm going to need to practice with that gun some more lol

I have my Browning on order, should be here in 2wks or so. Also bought a couple goodies for it.

Funny enough, after signing up for this contest - I asked my Grandmother about this old Colt Woodsman I have. She informed me that it was actually her Dad's pistol and that he was not just the President of the local shooting club, but also quite the marksman. Maybe its in my blood!

So since I heard that, I've been even a bit more excited about this contest now. Let's hope I don't botch it and let my nerves drag down my performance. I know I can shoot, but there will certainly be some mental stress going into this thing. Running against a clock by itself is quite a stress inducer and really jacks up your accuracy as you rush to speed your strings.

I am going to need to run a few test strings at the range following the comp's rules. Which means I'll need permission of the local range... or else just run practices after my upcoming classes if possible.

I might just buy that ultra light mark III I think it would work better and there is just something about mine I don't like, I think the bull barrel will be too heavy for fast transitions as well

I did not get a light barrel, nor a bull barrel... but agreed, you definitely want to balance the gun to perform the task you have in mind for it!

Ran through 10 practice strings (2/target hitting all 5 @20' for 10rnds ea.) and managed to score under 10sec on every single string... And started averaging much faster towards the end of 1hr of practice. I really need my other mag to show up!

The prescribed 20' distance for the qualifier. Practiced a bit more last night as well. I need to slow down and make all the shots count. Going to practice these strings right after running speed drills isn't the best idea!

Are qualifier results being listed online anywhere before the deadline? I want to see how I'm doing! I had a 4.77 string last night only dropping one outside the bullseye!

sometimes with the timed stuff its faster to be a little sloppy and take a penalty than be slower and score perfect, ive ran into this with idpa, shoot perfect but get beat by someone that shot sloppy and took a few penalties

The scores are live on our website and updated immediately. https://www.ammarksman.com/standings...gun&region=332

Make sure you are timing each string individually and reload time is not included. String 1 is 10 rounds, 2 rounds in each bullseye, String 2 is 5 rounds, 1 round in each bullseye, and String 3 is 10 rounds again, 2 rounds in each bullseye. The range staff at each participating range will be there to time everything for you during the qualifying round.

Keep shooting guys!

2 second penalty per drop when you're doing a 10 rnd string in sub 6sec is painful. I tried just blasting going for speed and easily double my "clean run" times.

Thanks for that link! I've been killing myself trying to see how I'm doing. Bringing 'good' friends to the range and having them try...

Huge relief to see that list!
