I'm about to start the search for a 2500/3500 or an avalanche with one. Anyone have any experience with it?

they suck gas like craaaazy but make insane torque. something like 500ft lbs at 3500rpm. I have one in my boat. Very reliable motors.

They're good motors, but as Jared said, don't expect anything more than 10mpg if you're lucky.

8.1 is easily one of the best gas powered towing motors.

I drove one for about 2 years, best truck I've ever owned. My father also used it to tow his 28 foot boat. I suggest you get a pick up and not the avalanche. The Avalanche did not come with the Allison transmission, but the pick ups did. Makes a huge difference. Also I did average 11mpg towing or not lol.

I'm not worried about mpg. I don't have a long commute. I just want a toy to piss off my coworker. Lol. He has a 2013 Harley f150 with some loud, shitty exhaust. An 8100 with straight pipes should silence him. LOL

The stock muffler is HUGE, I tore that shit out and welded in 2 magnaflow mufflers. Sounded beast afterwards.

There's a company out there that mods them. After owning a vette, their prices look pretty reasonable too. Raylar is the name I believe

if I wasnt stuck on ls powered vehicles I would have found my truck with an 8.1 and Allison.
my buddy has the same truck as me with it and it does tow like a champ. he put long tubes on it with straight pipes literally going straight back from each header. its the only vehicle ive ever liked straight piped. rumbles like a damn Harley at low rpms

Default GM Vortec 8100

The 8.1 has LSx style heads and the LSx firing order. ;-) it's like an LSx big block!

I found 2 local ones. An avalance for 9500 and a 3500 dually for 11.4k

Both have 120k miles
